Bridges of Madison County. It's the only novel I've ever read that I actually had to stop reading because I was crying so much I couldn't make out the words.
Clint didn't a fabulous job making it into a movie. I'm glad I had read the book first though, because I think it would have been spoiled if I'd seen the movie first.
Too bad none of Robert James Waller's other stuff ever lived up to this....!

I'm well into the Arthur Legend, so I have favourite novels as opposed to "a novel".
I love the Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and the Bernard Cornwell trilogies, which go forward from Arthurian times, to the Holy Grail, etc and covers a lot of English History, whilst incorporating legend and humour.
One other novel I really enjoyed was The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova. This incorporates the Dracula story, and is quite enthralling.
Brightest Blessings and Happy Reading.
