What do you think of breed specific legislation (ie. banning pit bulls or other breeds)?

I think it's bull.. The politicians that are putting forth the motion to ban different breeds often aren't even positive what those breeds look like. Michael Bryant, the moron liberal politician who succeeded in putting forth the motion to ban 'pitbulls' in Ontario, Canada, was interviewed on TV and asked to point out what he believed a pitbull was. He pointed to a Cane Corso, a dog about twice the size of an average pit. Even worse, they aren't the only breed on the chopping block. I know more chihuahua's capable of leaving nasty bite wounds on people than I do Rottweilers, Dobermans and Pitbulls combined, but yet, its the last 3 breeds that are in trouble. I guess it's the type of owner they attract, too. Generally people buy a Rottie, Dobie or Pit because they want people to know how bada$$ they are, and then leave the poor animal staked outside in the backyard with no socialization. Now I'm not saying, every owner is like that. I've been involved in the dog fancy for over 15 years, and know many owners that love, adore and pamper their rotties and dobes. I also know people that own the sweetest pits alive, sweeter than any dog I've ever met. But sadly, I think there should be tougher laws on the offenders/owners of vicious dogs, not allowing them to own animals or just dogs until they can prove they are capable, compassionate and responsible animal owners. Punish the deed, not the breed!

I agree. Usually none of these dogs are vicious towards people, it's other dogs that need to beware. I hate politicians who blindly set up these laws without ever having owned a dog themselves. As for vicious, what about those poodles? Those little fellas can leave one heck of a wound if they don't like you and of all the dogs I've known I've only been threatened by a toy poodle .... yeah, chihuahuas aren't very nice either.
