When you apply for a job, any job, you should have an idea of how much salary is on offer for the role. You should have in mind what sort of salary you are looking for. There are many references sources on the internet to find out average salaries for someone with various skills/qualification.
For example, in our company, we recruit software developers, and we regularly check on this site: http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/ and others like it for current salary trends. Depending on where you are based in the world you can check with recruitment agencies who should be happy to help you work out what you should be looking for salary-wise. In general if you have been working already you would have an idea of what you were earning and if it's competitive compared to others in the same industry.
The best thing to remember about negotiating salaries with an employer is not to ask for more than you are worth - if you do this they won't think you're extra special they'll think you're greedy and might reject you just for asking for too much money. Stick to what you're worth and give yourself a better chance of being offered the job. Good luck!
