I say something like hey whats up the asl crap is old and out dated by 10 years and kinda dumb if you really think about it. Because does it really matter if you are there just to chat. asl would matter if you were planning on meeting the person in the future or something.

I usually say "Hello" or "Hey" and immediately explain why I've addressed the person. Not being rude, but I automatically ignore someone if they ask me asl first. Just seems like they're more interested in my anatomy and how to get to it than what I have to say.
