why do politicians think taxing is the answer to solving global warming?

I'm annoyed today. We keep on being told in the news about how we need to do something about global warming, and yes they are right but why can't governments do anything pro-active to actually tackle it?
So far here in the UK the only thing that has been done in an attempt to cut CO2 emissions is to put £10 on the price of a flight (like thats going to do anything to reduce the number of flights). But don't worry i'm sure the opposition will do something, so what do the Conservatives want to do? they want to tax flights even more!. Do they realise that things other than planes pollute the atmosphere? Where is the politician showing commitment to increasing renewable energy or reducing emissions from cars? no ones got the balls to do anything serious about global warming and theres nothing we can do about it because theres no other options to that of the labour party.
This is exactly why people don't vote. whats the point if you know that the opposition is going to be identical to the current lot. Lots of taxes and nothing new or original.

I think the taxes is the way to give business incentive but I think that there should be initatives which create a mood or thought process which will encourage conservation and good environmental deeds. Kind of like the litter campaigns of the past.

These tax increases never work in the long run.
They will have an initial effect when people realise they will have to pay extra for things they already do (drive, fly etc.) but then people get used to it and go back to normal.
The trouble is the money from these 'environmental taxes' just go into the coffers with all the other tax - the money should be invested into research on renewables etc. to actually make some kind of improvement.
Not enough people are taking the situation seriously enough in my opinion, this means it is pretty low on the agenda for most political parties - they say the right things to make most people feel happy but don't really do anything that will make a difference.
