Old vs vintage

I look at things and often see something as old and therefore not worth much. Other people may see it as vintage and therefore a hot commodity. When qualifies something as vintage rather then old? What is yor criteria? If we refered to our senior citizens as vintage -- would they get treated better, maybe with more respect?

Vintage is old. Old is vintage. Value depends on demand. But senior citizens are vintage and are valued for their experience and wisdom - or at least they ought to be.

So many senior citizens are treated so poorly, it is really sad. They don't have the money to live or heat their homes or buy their medications. They can't drive, they can't get around, our society must change in our attitude toward our vintage citizens.

There are a lot of things that are old, but a lot of these things are unique and antique and they lasted a lot longer than the things that you buy today. Today companies rip you off and most things that you buy today fall apart very quickly. In regards to senior citizens there should be more respect to these people and remember that one day you and I and everyone else will get old we do not stay young forever.

Yes, much of what we can buy today is junk. I think thebiggest ripoff right now is the giant step back in these LCD and plasma TV. They are expensive with a relatively short life. I am glad you still think of yourself as young. That makes me feel pretty good. Thanks.

For me vintage is something that is between 40-70 years old, but in style and quality. Old is something over 70 years old. I was lucky to find a few vintage high quality stuff on local garage sale. I also have few items that my family collected in 1937. Old is worth more than vintage.

Vintage is a group or collection of people or things sharing certain characteristics or a year or period of origin: a car of 1942 vintage. or length of existence; age. Old is having lived or existed for a relatively long time; far advanced in years or life. or relatively advanced in age: Pamela is our oldest child. or made long ago; in existence for many years: an old book. or of or relating to a long life or to people who have had long lives: or ripe old age. or having or exhibiting the physical characteristics of age: a prematurely old face. or having or exhibiting the wisdom of age; mature: a child who is old for his years. or having lived or existed for a specified length of time I tend to agree with these definitions. I would hope that I and others could become vintage as we all get older.

I love your last sentence. I find that the Elderly do not get treated as well as they deserve to be treated. With respect and it just breaks my heart. I love the elderly and they are so lonely. They hunger for someone to touch them and smile at them. It is sad that they are not treated with respect and valued.

That is so true, so many of them have so much to give and people blow them off because they are old. They don't see where these people have a value. If we give them a chance, they can greatly enrich our lives. This past summer, I met the sweetest lately, she was nearly 80, a volunteer EMT. SHe was telling me how over 30 years she had delivered about15 babies. She went out on calls several times a week. She also worked teaching EMTs. She is a vintage lady with a lot to offer. I feel richer for having met her.

I like your last thought. I have taken various classes pertaining to the care of the elderly. In the social services class the instructor made a profound statement. " We show how little we value our elderly, by how little regard we give to the jobs devoted to their care. We must start valuing our elders, and the people who care for them, before we find ourselves to be the forgotten elderly."

What you said is so true, as soon as I get my act together I am starting nursing school. I am scared I will put all of the work and money into it, and then not be able to get a job. I was told by several people, I can always get a job in a nursing home, that they will hire anyone. I think that is so sad, so 2 reasons, one, I am too old to get started in another career and the nursing homes will hire anyone.

I think old vs vintage is a matter of "the eye of the beholder". Some people view antique or used furniture as old and worthless. Others will see it as vintage, beautiful and crafted completely different then anything today. I think it's completely dependent upon the eye of the beholder and the article being considered. I personally love to enjoy "vintage" items, from old clothes and doilies to old furniture and dishes.

the terms are just the same thing. It's just a marketing solution to recycle the old clothes collection remained in the storage. In my opinion the fashion always recycle itself just in the name of the profit, in this way they make you pay a lot of money for old things....

I would say something is vintage when it exemplifies the best of its time period. Vintage champagnes are the best years and vintage clothes are well-preserved classic fashion statements. It's not proper usage to call a person vintage. People are different than objects and in this case not interchangable following the word vintage. I think senior citizens are treated with respect now- one is president of the free world.

Senior citizens are treated with respect. I want you to go randomly to your phone book, pick out 5 nursing homes, then come back and tell us if you think seniors are treated with respect.
