America: Love It or Leave It

Why do some people use this response when someone makes a negative comment on America? Wasn't our Constitution set up so that if the majority aren't happy with the way things are in the country, they can vote to change it? Why this "all-or-nothing" thinking? I made a comment on another post about our government, and the post immediately following basically said, "if you don't like it in America, why don't you leave and move to South Africa, etc., where you could be shot for what you said?" I have the right to free speech living here, but that doesn't mean that everything I say has to paint a rosy picture of our country. I appreciate my rights as an American citizen, but that doesn't make everything about our government absolutely wonderful. We can be dissatisfied with our government as long as we take our duties as citizens seriously. And I do. I vote. Wouldn't "America: Love It or Change It" me more appropriate?

Welcome to the U.S! I hope you didn't have the experience my fiance had with the immigration official at the American Embassy in London! I was embarrassed to be an American, there! They treated the people deplorably, in my opinion. The folks had to wait 2 hours in line outside, with no portapotties and no weather cover. It rained a bit and the wind came up and both my fiance and I ended up with strep throat. Then, the official he met with was downright rude, rolling her eyes, shaking her head, and looking everywhere but at him while he answered questions. I apologize to anyone who had that official that day and would like to say that the majority of U.S. citizens are not like that.

I know! I hate when people say that to me. I have a lot of criticism with things that are wrong. That does not mean that I hate the country and want to leave. It means I want to fix the problems and make the country better for everyone living in it. I want to help the country. I don't know why people get so offensive about it. I guess they view America as being perfect already or something.
