High schoolers facing felony charges for scavenger hunt

A bunch of high school students from Texas were arrested because they went on a scavenger hunt that included traffic signs and articles from people's yards, taken without permission. They are facing felony charges. Do you think they deserve such punishment, or do you think the court is pushing the envelope by charging them with felonies?

No, its not extreme at all in fact its the law. They need to learn now before they get out there in the world that its against the law to steal.Otherwise they will keep stealing.

They could have just made them give the articles back and given them a stern talking to, though it is still stealing and they could have been shot by someone who thought they were an intruder. They have to be taught a lesson for their own good I suppose, but I think it's extreme to charge them with felonies.

I think they need to be serious with these offenders, so that it is not so funny to think they can do this. The possible consequences of stolen traffic signs is that an accident might happen, and someone might be killed. Another scary thought, there was an instance where pranksters were trespassing on someone's farm, and the owner shot and killed the kids who were "just having fun". These kids need to wake up to the fact that stealing is wrong, even if you are a high school student.
