As you know, there is a very tough competition prevailing between Windows and Linux, especially in the SERVER arena, even though Windows still rocks in the DESKTOP arena.
The important drawback of Linux is that, it requires some basic knowledge of the Linux,File systems etc to use. But Windows is more user friendly. I believe that is the reason for the success of Windows.
Once Linux too can become user friendly like Windows, I do definitely say that Linux will rock the world.

Strictly speaking, with our model the only way in which Microsoft can get rid of Linux is by setting the price at zero. But, even if microsoft did that, the company would still be selling MS Office for a positive price. Thus, we conjecture that even in this case, there would be people developing and using Linux.
The more important question is :What motivates developers to contribute to open source projects in the first place? As long the dirvers are there, Linux will persist. Given that linux was born in 1992 in an industry already dominated by Microsoft, and given that financial motive is secondary, it will be vary hard for anyone to oust Linux.
The organizational stream of research on OSS has indetified severa drivers of motivation to contribute to open source projects. For Microsoft to have a chance to kick Linux out of the market, it needs to successfully fight them. First, some developers see softuare as scientific knowledged to be shared "like the sharing of recipes among cooks"' in fact, some describe software developers more like artist seeking fun, challenge, and beauty in their work than like calculative, aquare-minded engineers.Second , some individuals find fun to go aginst Microsoft. As the OSS/free software movement gains momentum and developers forsee that victory is within reach, they increase their effort ti accomplish this.Third, because most deirable to participate in OSS projects to signal their ability and to enhance their chaces of promotion and profesional advacement. Finally, user-developers sometimes fix bugs that they find and then release the improved code so that everybody can benefit. To the motivations of independent developers to contribuute to Linux, we have to add the important supoort that the free operating system receives form companies and goverments. As long as the motives that induce these organizations to back Linux persist, Linux will not ga away.

The main factor that gave windows it's current popularity was the simplicity of use as opposed to using command line, which meant that suddenly every individual could use a computer. This is no longer valid because many Linux distributions have excellent GUIs (Graphical User Interface) such as GNOME or KDE, but of course many people have used Windows so long that they are reluctant to try anything else.
I have great doubts about Microsoft ever releasing their source code as open source.

Windows is money-driven program so its being updated and enhanced by its programmer because Bill Gates say so. But Linux on the other hand is all about prestige, honor, and may I say charity for those who can't afford the growing prize of Windows. Maybe Microsoft will lunch its open source for windows soon, just thinking how soon it is and do they really will give the genuine source code? I don't think so. It will only show the weakness of Windows, how they being attacked by many viruses since their first Windows 3.5.

The reason for Linux success is not just because it is open source. The list includes security, stability, virus free too. When taking these factors windows is still a failure even though they have been in the market for so long. Actually Linux have been around since 1990 but its popularity increased few years back since linux is no longer a hackers tool but can be used for home and business use. Thanks to projects like KDE, Gnome etc. And about windows releasing an Open source OS, I don't think such a thing would happen in the near future, anyway I am sure that they are not going to release windows code to the public.
