Last week, my dd broke her arm. The ER referred me to an orthopedist. My insurance will only take referrals from my regular Dr. So, I call the Dr. I have to come in for an appt. before I can get a refferal. Okay, says I, I live 20 miles from town. Is it really necessary? You can't do anything for her arm, anyway. Yes, it's neccessary, the receptionist assures me.So, off we go.
For a forty mile round trip, I got...
to talk to the Dr. myself. He wouldn't see my child, get this, because she was running fever!
Whoever heard of a pediatrician not seeing a sick child?
She had to sit in the lobby while I went back to talk to the Dr. I was mad!!
Apparently, he has a medical condition that will worsen if he is around sick people and catches what they have. Why didn't they let her see a P.A. then?
I sat there for an hour and was called back to talk to him. I assured him her arm was broke and she needed a cast, he asked me was she in pain. I said, well, her arm is broke in two places. The Er Dr had to twist it back into place. She broke both bones. And she complains it hurts even after I give her motrin and tylenol. Okay, he says and tells me he's gonna let the receptionist give me the referral. Not even a prescription for my poor dd!
To top it off, my other dd got sick from the waiting room!!
GRRR!

Having to jump through the legal hoops while seeing your daughter in such pain is frustrating enough. The topper must have been with your other daughter getting ill!A doctor unable to see sick patients??How about a mechanic unable to get dirty?Maybe they should not be a family doctor but more a specialist/consultant?

It used to not be that way. Even though we've always had looong waits in the lobby (up to four hours but averaging 2-3). When I went into the room, he was wearing a doctor's mask and wouldn't shake my hand. I was afraid I'd catch something from him! The nurse assured me that he wasn't contageous, he just didn't want to catch anything. The kicker was that I had my temperature taken, too. If I would have had been running fever, they would have rescheduled! That means my dd would have benn in a temperary sling from Tues. till the next Mon! Or until we could be seen by someone else in the office.
If I don't get my other two for a well child visit, my insurance is going to cancel on us, because that's a requirement for our policy.
As I said before...GRRR!!!

That would have infuriated me also. I think I'd be looking for a new pediatrician...immediately if not sooner. He really ought to be in a different line of work if he can't or won't see sick kids. Some things I'll just never understand.

Now, I've gotten a letter saying that I need to bring my other two children in for a well child check up. I can't because one got sick in their waiting room! I have to call my insurance company later today to see about switching Drs. They will only pay for certain ones in our area. Looks my drive is about to become longer!
