Was chatting with my fiancee about this just now and thought it would make an interesting and fun post.
She said "6 times a year, for 19 years", which makes 114 times.
Initially i was amazed at that number.
My thoughts are just about what colour choices you make, does mood affect colour choice, events in life, things like that.
I'd be interested to know from guys too...cos i guess some colour their hair.

I used to dye my hair red a lot. Then I once had the color fade into something that reflected the colors I wore, and it made my hair end up looking green. I got so upset after trying on a bunch of clothes that looked terrible because of the hair that I dyed it back to brown and haven't gone back.
I've been toying with the idea of dying with henna, though, because I would still love to have red hair. My reasons? My dad is a redhead, and all I got was the fair skin!

Would never have guessed the multi country line lol..i was looking at the posting avatar pic ;)
I guess the weirdest thought on reflected colours in the clothing would be a mirror effect for hair - but, it's late and my thoughts should be stopped by 10pm lol
Thanks for the reply..and yes, fire engine red !

Green hair !
A proud (possibly Scottish by family line?) woman with reservations on fashion maybe, with you much preferring to fit in, rather than spike out all the time.
Family life, being important, would make you wish to uphold traditions and traits.
Green hair doesn't usually feature as something people would aspire to have, i quite agree.
So, would you ever consider going a really bright red ?

It would have been one thing if it were a pure green and it were on purpose. I'd be all for that. And it wasn't so much about fitting in (I've never done that : )) as looking good to myself. My hair was throwing everything off, so that had to end.
Depends on what you mean by bright red. If we're talking fire engine red, then yes if I didn't think it would scare the little old ladies I work for/with. If we're talking carrot top red, probably not--I'd look too much like my boyfriend. He's Irish, I'm French Canadian/Czech by bloodline. I would prefer auburn.

Thank you, honey, for telling everyone I dye my hair! LOL! In case you haven't guessed, I'm Slider's fiancee. It doesn't really matter these days when a woman colors her hair, does it? I remember the "Does she or doesn't she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure!" commercial when I was a kid. My mother, one of my brothers and I were all prematurely grey. I started coloring my hair when I was 22 (you do the math, you'll figure out how old I am). I've stuck primarily with the reddish-browns to brown-black, although when I was in high school, I did the Sun-In thing. I normally have dark brown hair, so it looked really cheesy when it started growing out.

I see your point, but it wasn't the case for me. I had been coloring my hair before the divorce.

Can't imagine which brand of cheese eek!
It doesn't matter about when, as such, though from reading up on this subject over a few years (yes really) i've come to the conclusion that women sometimes change their hair colour after an emotional trauma. Some change their whole head after divorce, in many ways !
"the new me, the new direction"
Would you agree ?

So long that I don't remember what my original color really was. I got my first gray hair at 23. Most of the time I go with a light brown. I have had it blonde a couple of times (but my husband hates it.) I've gone auburn a few times too. (My coloring looks good with it) My color choice is usually the because of the bottle I pick up. Or when I go to my sister-in-law and she colors it the way she wants - and its never the same.

Most of the time the color isn't too drastic of a difference. The auburn was, but my mom is a redhead so I decided to try it awhile. The blonde, I liked, but my husband hated. There has only been one time that I re-colored it because of the color being really off. I don't even remember what it looked like because it was so many years ago. I just remember my sister saying she didn't know what her friend was thinking. (They were in cosmetology at the time). Usually if I add a stylish cut with it, the color just blends in.

Soooo...you accept the colour changes and just live with it ? I really thought that a hair colour choice was something women make as a statement. Though, if all it is is hair, what's the big deal, right ?
I'm finding this thread fascinating - thanks everyone so far :)

I never did it until about 6 years ago. I definately don't remember to do it every 6 weeks! I usually remember when I look pay attention to the mirror and realize that all those gray hairs are really showing up. I'm only 33! I need to do it again soon - maybe this weekend. I do like the look and feel when it's fresh. Makes me feel all special. :)

ahh, so the pampering the self is important.
Do you see it as a treat ? something for you and you only ?
Perhaps it's a chance to celebrate that really, at 33, if all that's wrong is a bit of gray hair, then life is good.
Can't say i blame you :)

i colored my hair alote with different colors..it began when i was a teenager..purple,black,red..black and red together and so on..that lasted till i was 27..at 27 i started to notice that it has bad effects on my hair..so i started using a natural coloring..a black one and this is my hair color since then
so let's see:
16-27= about 50 times
27-34=about 42 tims..(i started coloring at this stage every 2 months...white hair had appeared:(

Seems like the standard colours don't damage as much as the striking ones then, or is it to do with ingredients in the natural ones ?
Black and red must have looked interesting, mind yu, several of the ones you mention would !

i dyed my hair when i was high school.. hmm about... 8x..
and then about a year ago.. i dyed my hair color green.. but it stayed for a month.. and eventually fade away and get the yellowish color.. i just like green back then. :) now i want to try orange. my new favorite color. but my school wouldn't allow us to dye our hair. :-s maybe on vacation.

ORANGE ??!
Biskwet, i think that's fantastic !
My eldest daughter has recently started to dye her hair and she has slimmed and all sorts. By colouring the way you want it, you can see how you feel, see what people think and live a bit of something most people wouldn't dare to do.
What made you pick radical colours ?

I´ve honestly lost count of how many times I coloured my hair.
I like to experience with my hair, luckily it´s quite thick and resistant if not I would probably be bold by now, lol.
Mood doesn´t really affect the colour I choose, I just don´t always want to look the same.

Let's see I've been dying my hair for 17 years and I'd say on average I've been doing so about 5 times a year which means about 85 times. Seems like it should be more but I guess not. I do know when my hair is dyed I can wear different colors then I can with my natural blonde hair. I can also style my hair better. I know it shouldn't matter on the color but my hair seems to lay and style better when it's dyed auburn. Go figure.

Well, I had never colored my hair until very recently. I have started with some of the rinses that are to cover grey. Yeah, the 'old age moster' is attacking! Ha! Maybe I should do something radical so that I might look younger?! Perhaps some pretty blue like my daughter's friend. Hmmmm that looks younger than grey..right?!

Ahh but, the blue rinse is for ladies of errr vintage years..complete with fur lined boots, over thick woolen coat in summer and a wheeled tartan trolley to push along !
But that raises another question - colour and thought.
What's wrong with grey ?

This number will probably surprise a lot of women, but I have never colored my hair. Not all. I used to do it when I was a kid, but it was always the temporary stuff, nothing that would ever damage my hair, and would wash out within 24 hours. I've never felt the need to fry my hair anymore by using chemicals to color it. It's just not for me.

WoW!! I never really thought about it, I color my hair 4 times a year for 13 years which is 52 times. Of coarse I have colored my hair every shade red at least once, It was black once, a few different shades of blonde. And Auburn right now.
So can you guess what color my natural hair color is? Cause I really don't remember.

Could you see a point where you'd just let it be whatever colour it wanted to be ?
What colour do the roots go ?
As a guess on colour - i'm going to say a mid brown, which you don't suit with your personality. But, what is that personality would be my next thought and you may not know fully, wishing to explore different routes in life, making travel plans often but actually going through with those plans often too. Firm decisions are what you may strive to keep to, but then find circumstance changes seemingly stone set decisions.
I wonder if a persons psychology can really be assessed so remotely and by a hair colour post LOL

The answer to that query from my side is 0. I am so much in love with my dark hair color, that I have decided to keep it that way and not change. Also my aversion to chemicals for things like coloring keeps me from doing so.
Of course, once a year when we have the festival of Holi, automatically our hair gets colored as we play with colors to celebrate that function.

I'm very interested in how your hair is coloured for Holi.
How long does it last ? why is it dyed ?
And you say about playing with colours...it would be great to hear back from you about the meaning behind the hair colouring at that time.

Actually not, you are right in a way. Once the colors are applied, every one looks a clown, not matter who the person is. Then when the Bhang starts taking effect, then people start swaying and singing and start doing a lot of silly things. It actually becomes a lot of fun. People who tend to have too much of Bhang typically tend to keep doing the last activity that they remembered.
Once one of my friends had an overdose of Bhang and we were on a sea shore. So every five minutes, this guy would look at his feet and comment that it is dirty and go to the water and wash it carefully. Then he would come back and by the time he would reach us his legs would be covered with the sand and then again he would repeat the same routine. He kept doing it for the best part of 3 hours whilst we were having our fun.
Cheers!
Ram

Thank you for that enlightening reply. Does sound like a lot of fun !
Seems like a good laugh and something to demonstrate a humility for the soul too. In a way, whatever happens to the outside self the inside remains the same richness.
Maybe i'm too deep with that comment tho lol

I have colored my hair about 5 times.
And I don't mean different colors.
I mean I have tried my best to slow down the ever increasing onslaught of gray hair.
So every once in a while I put in some "light brown" and just leave it for a few minutes.
It just covers some of the gray and leaves a bit and looks quite natural.

Actually i remember that i have coloured my hair only four time in my life. This is the truth. I have silky black hair, so all my friend advised me not to colour the hair. Now after marriage , my husband never allows me to colour the hair, as he says that my hair is natural black, it might get spoiled. BUt i love to dye the hair.

Oh shila, I wonder why he won't allow it, that's a shame if you really want to change your hair colour. Perhaps though, he might feel that the chemicals can't be trusted.
In my opinion, if it's so important to you, you could do some online research about certain brands, the chemicals that go into the products etc...hopefully then your friends and your husband can know the whole truths about safer brands.
Perhaps if you print out the results and show them him day after day after day, he'll just get fed up and allow you to lol
One other thing...it's your hair and you can do what you please with it, without making it look daft of course. If he wanted to dye his hair could he ?

I'm now 31 years old and I've colored my hair for 3 times now. I'm planning to have a new color again for a new image. I'm getting older and I feel like my looks are getting boring as I grow old. My husband said I need to do something to make me feel like younger. I agree on that and I'm going to the salon next week for a hair fix.

Depends really though doesn't it.
You feel your looks to be fading, so will you need a walking stick and bus pass soon ?! Not likely!
31 is an age where we can't just spring out of bed and look wonderful, it's perhaps the age we start to have to work a bit at how we look (us guys too with exercise and types of food intake).
If your hubby is saying this as support and to give you a bit of encouragement then i support what he says...after all, if you improve the way you feel by improving the way you look, then he's not likely to complain is he lol
In my opinion it's never wise to dwell on what society thinks of your looks though. What matters is how you feel about yourself and how your husband feels about you. Anyone else is just being downright rude if they comment negatively.
Enjoying being 31.
My fiancee is 41 and as radiant as can be. From looking at pictures of her through the years i would say she looks the best ever now...so in that light, 31 is a puppy age !

Hello,
I never coloured my hair in my life.
I'm a guy, I'm 38, and you know, I have not much hair on my head :-)
But now my hair is going to get grey and I think I will colour my hear.
Bye

The first guy to reply, i think. Thanks :)
I'm lucky enough to have a full head of hair still at 37, but my mums side of the family has the surname 'Gray', relating to grey hair. We go naturally grey at a young age but it seems i've been somewhat lucky so far.
It's probably worth a go colouring your hair...but what happens if the rest falls out, with the chemicals used? hehe

i haven't yet tried to colour my hair.i think natural hairs are natural beauty .colouring hairs are harmless if tried less oftenly and also make us look great and smart too . but still i would to follow natural beauty.

Natural beauty would be the best route..but that leads to grey hair and that's the whole point of colour dyes!
I can see how people with the wrong colour hair for how they feel would wish to change it and i can see how people with a lot of grey may wish to colour theirs....but as to just changing it for effect or on a whim, that's what gets me.
It seems like you are very happy with your colour, fair enough, and thanks for replying :)

I have long hair also but I have a girl that has been cutting my hair for about 6 years now and I just love her. I just get trims in the back and my bangs every three months cut. Before it's my mom who cuts my hair.
