Hello Well we know it's comming ...You know that time of year when we swim through the mud to feed and get hay out and we watch our horses struggle through the knee deep mud. The only good thing is it builds some nice muscle in the pasture horses Once in a while someone might pull a muscle if not careful. Are you in the mud yet? What do you do about it if anything? How long does it stay where you live? I'm sorry this is such a dirty post Thanks R

Hi, I thought is was only us in England that had to endure muddy months! My horse pulled his shoe off in the mud and he has such bad feet. We have an expression here. A teaspoon of rain in autumn makes a bucket of mud but a bucket of mud in spring makes a teaspoon of mud. Having said that we seem to have mud for 6 months of the year unless its frozen or snowing! all the best urban

But if you horses are up to their knees you must have more mud than us in that month or maybe you keep your horses on less ground than we? Rule of thumb here is 2 acres for a horse plus one acre for each additional horse all the best urban

We have 4 horses in over 6 acres. We have a quick frost and when the ground lossens up it gets deep mud. My sister-in-law had 300+acres with about 30to 40 animals and they have the same problem. We have clay mud her.In some parts of US it's not as bad. When I lived in California the mud was jus over the tops of the hooves. Yes...it is mud season once again here in western PA. I haven't figured out how to deal with it but a family that was in our 4-H club a few years back tried this. They dumped shale in the muddy places (standing areas, barn entrances, etc.). It worked at the time but, as I have not kept in touch with them, I don't know how well or how long it held up. We are still watching and waiting for our horses to grow gills and fins and start swimming!
