I was watching a program on TV (history channel) the other day and they were examining an ancient coin that had an engraving of Cleopatra which was, well, not so pretty. IN the engraving she had a weak chin and a hooked nose. In fact, most records of the time say waht a good polotician she was and how smart and even devious, but they don't mention her beauty at all (meaning they were probably being tactful and not mentioning her actual lack of beauty). Even Shakespeare did not describe her as beautiful in his plays (although, the role would have been played by a boy, so he may have left it out because it would get a laugh where he did not want on). It wasn't really until more modern times when people started describing her as beautiful because people assumed she would have had to be pretty to persuade people to do what she wanted. (having Liz Taylor play her in the movies probably didn't hurt either.)
