why do people chat in the internet

over the years i have seen many people chat on the net,for me chat is meaning less as nobody is serios ,do anyone else have anyother opinion

chatting helps you in making lots of friends online.it is not totally meaningless because lots of people are serious. just because some people cheat over the net it doesn not mean that all are like that.

I communicate to the others on the internet for knowledge about other things. I do not see how it is meaningless. If it is, communicating over the phone is just as meaningless.
