Did you ever wonder where some everyday phrases come from?

How do some of these words get started? Dead End...did someone drive down a road that ended and die? Then there is cockeyed, lollygag....? Where is their origin? Why do they call it a parkway? People don't park on it. Anyone have any to add to my list? Is there a book somewhere that explains where these got started and why?
