I am one of those that is nearly clueless as to why people and animals yawn. I am not sure where I heard this, but I once heard an explanation that stated that when we are tired our bodies aren't getting most of the oxygen that our cells need to keep the body going and in the awake state. When we yawn we are taking in a great deal more oxygen and when we exhale we get rid of a great deal more carbon dioxide, thus helping keep the body in a more awake state.
Whether that statement is true or not I am not sure, but at least it is something to consider.

i think we should take that as a consideration. so yawn help us to keep in awake state and not to make us feel more sleepy..i read an article saying that the exact causes of yawning is still unknown. i guess this is a state of our body were we releases some extra air that our body dont need and inhale more useful air. well thanks for ur reply.

Scientific research has shown us that there really is no definitive answer to any of these questions.
Yawning seems to be one of the many wonders of the animal race, that we haven't yet figured out.
