How do you improve sustain & tone on your Bass or Guitar? This is what I did.

Being a bass player sustain & tone are important. I don't need an amplifier, unless I'm on stage, for people to hear me. I accomplished this on my custom Yamaha 5 string by adding more mass.
1st I added a brass nut. You can see in my photo that the nut is a brass color not the usual ivory.
2nd I replaced the bridge. The original bridge was nice & I still have it but it wasn't what I needed so it was replaced.
3rd The machine heads or tuning pegs were replaced with a higher quality product.
What are your ideas? How do you improve your tone & sustain. Don't tell me that you use your amp. We are discussing improving the instrument.
A quick fix is to add a C-clamp to the head but you will look ridiculous.
