What is the purpose of a tag anyway?

I don't seem to get this part of a post. You type up a discussion and then you have to tag it. Can anyone tell me what I am missing here? Did I skim over that fact when going throught the learning process? Please let me know, Thanks FranMc

Example. If you post about cats, tag it cats, pets, animals. That way when you want to respond to someone, those will be filed, and you can pull up similar interests, and you can find your posts too.
