Please Be Extra Careful While Driving!

Have you ever noticed that there are more wildlife run over by vehicles this time of year? Animals have their mind and energies on caring for their young to be as alert for other dangers like a vehicle coming down the road. I hate to see all the wildlife laying dead in the road but I hate to see a wounded one even more. Wildlife cannot take themselves to the Doctor or patch themselves up like we can. What can be done if you hit an animal and it is not dead? We were leaving for vacation early one morning. We were along way from home and a deer ran in front of us. My daughter was driving. She dead stopped and another deer ran into the vehicle. We could not evn open the passenger door. It dented it that bed. It tore off the side view mirror too. The deer was sitting, not laying, in the road. It was not dead. We drove up the road to a payphone and called 911 and explained the situation to them. They said that they would send a ranger out to take care of it. We were on a tight schedle so we had to continue on our trip. We were gone for 3 weeks and we never did hear what happened to the deer. It was not in our county so we had no way to find out what happened but we did all that we could do. Be very careful if you have wounded an animal, their instincts are for survival and they can be very aggresive. The best way to see that this does not happen is do drive with care and always look out for the wildlife. When an animal runs out in front of you, be alert for more. Be safe on the road and be alert.

Fortunately my family members are all careful when driving. Mom lives in the country where thee are lots more wild animals than you'd find in the city, so she knows to be extra careful when driving. In the city there are different dangers though. Sometimes people's pets get lose and get run over. One has to be careful everywhere.

Yes it is something we have to be careful of here in Australia with kangaroos and other wildlife, it can be a very dangerous situation...

It is so unfortunate that animals venture onto the highways from the woods. We have invaded their natural habitat, and they do not understand the danger

Careful means to be aware of what you are doing, while driving. No need for that cell phone and maybe putting on makeup or whatever. Also slow down, we all drive too fast anyway. We are crowding these animals with all the building we are doing and they only want to live their lives. Take special care year round for them.

Yes, we are seeing a lot of deer in my area. On our way to the closest large city recently, a deer ran behind our car. I was so thankful as I looked into the rearview mirror that it had not run in front of our car. It was a two lane road with a lot of traffic oncoming and had it run in front of my car I wouldn't have been able to stop (I was going 55 MPH!) It is really frightning.

Amen to that, I've driven thousands and thousands of miles, including cross country 5 times and had never hit an animal until this past fall. I hit a deer. Luckily I wasn't driving too fast and stopped right away - as plastic was flying up on my windsheld. Over $200 damage and that was from the salvage yard, the deer walked away and appeared ok but I sat in the middle of the road crying both for the damage to my van and for hurting the deer.

My daughter is a vegetarian because she loves animals so much. She was driving when the deer hit our vehicle. She got out of hte car and began crying uncontrolable. I put her in the back seat and she just got in a ball and cried. I felt so sorry for her pain. It just broke her heart and she blamed herself but it was not her fault. I know what you felt like.

I totally agree. We have alot of deer and other animals here. They seemto be everywhere. It seems like you go down the road, and you will see some in the field or close to the road every time.

You know I have often had the same thought. If it is the mother animal killed that leave the young with the parent to help teach it the instincts it needs to survive. I am back now Village an thanks for the concerning while I was off over the last three four months.Debbie

I am always on the look out for deer and moose. Though if given the choice I would rather hit a deer! You are right about calling rangers to take care of the situation. Bambi maybe cute, but can cause alot of damage when hurt and frightened.

The thought of hitting something keeps me more alert especially this time of the year when it is starting to get nicer and the long winter is coming to an end . You have to be extra careful in certain places in our area where you will run into a lot of moose , deer or even bears , not only to protect the animal but to protect yourself as some of these animals can hit you with such force the one could be quite injured if not killed . I have been lucky and have never hit anything but can remember years ago when I was with a friend and we were on our way to bingo . She hit a fox on the way but she didn't kill it , it lay severly wounded in the ditch , we ended up having an arguement about what to do because she wanted to leave it like it was and I wanted her to hit it again so it wouldn't suffer . We didn't know then that there was anyone you could call to come out and take care of these situations and she felt so bad that she hit the fox and I felt so bad that it was in pain because when we got out to check the fox it was making some horrible sounds . I will never forget how bad I felt when we got back in the car and drove away . As aweful as it sounds , I would have preferred if we could have put it out of it's misery then to leave it there suffering for who knows how long .

I know it. It breaks my heart. I know that sometimes as in your case,it can't be helped but people basically don't care. They want to get where they are going as fast as they can and they don't care that they are putting not only the wildlife but humans at risk.Where we live ,there are not only a lot of wildlife killed but people getting hurt because of speeders and red light runners.Unless there is a medical emergency,no place is that important that animal and human lives have to be put at risk for it. I am really glad that you stopped and called the Ranger.Wildlife have a habit of coming out of nowhere

I am always trying to be careful when driving and make sure that I do not hit any animals crossing the road, though sometimes there is nothing you can do about it because the animal may decide to run across at the last moment and you can not avoid them without crashing into another car. If I see one near the road I will slow down just in case. That is good that 911 sent out a ranger to provide help for the animal as I did not think 911 would do that other than for a human being.

We're always very careful on the roads in the area round here, specially in rural areas. We were driving along a street one day last summer, with all these huge houses with massive front yards and stuff. A deer came right out in front of us, so we hit the brakes and swerved to avoid hitting it. We managed to avoid it which was probably a good thing. Not 2 seconds after, her tiny baby came across the street too. It can't have been more than 2 weeks old, and the sight of that baby with it's mother walking serenely across the street made my heart skip a beat. It was so precious. People show a distinct lack of respect for Wildlife these days. I understand that in a few cases, it's impossible to stop in time, but people don't even get out of their vehicles to check the animal half the time and that annoys me. If we EVER hit an animal, I'd stop, no doubt about it. Even if I was on a schedule I don't know if I could leave an animal lying there alone till help arrived. I'm rather soft hearted lol.

the rule of the thumb is to be more carefull while driving

be extra carefull while driving saves your life as well as money and time also. if we didnt take our driving seriously then we have to suffer a lot. this not only gives us pain and many other sufferings but also to our near and dear ones.
