When is your best time to write?

I have really been unmotivated to write lately so most of my writing has been done at writing group on the weekend. However, last night I had trouble sleeping. My legs hurt and I guess my mind was active. I got up at 2am and sat at the dining room table and wrote non-stop for 2 hours. I wrote the most amazing story (15 pages). I read it to my almost 14 year old and it made her cry. I am so thrilled with it. I have never written late at night because I am usually too tired. What a time for my muse to strike! What about you? When is the best time of day for you to write?

Funny... I couldn't sleep last night either. As for writing, I haven't done any in quite a while, but there never seemed to be any "best" time for me.

I checked the calendar and the full moon is not until next week, so that can't be the reason. But then we both have fibromyalgia so I'm betting with the mild weather we got today the barometer made a major swing shift and sent us all spinning.

Congratulations on writing your story. If it got a reaction from your teenager, then it must have had some depth and feeling to it. Actually my best time for writing often is later in the evening, after everyone has gone to bed, and everything is quiet. Sometimes I've found my mind going even as I'm climbing into bed, so I'll grab the notebook and sit and write. It wouldn't be the first time that I've got up during the night because my legs were aching or I just couldn't sleep, and I've sat either at the computer or with a notebook writing. I often have to force myself to finally go to bed because I am so tired, or I know if I don't go and get some sleep, I'm going to have a difficult time getting thro' the next day. Sometimes I can write in the morning when I'm able to find the time to sit down for awhile. I've even taken my notebook along with me in the car to appointments when I know I might have to wait and I've actually written a few poems, and started into stories even then.

I wrote a very lengthy poem to my mother in the waiting room of the x-ray lab. I usually have a book with me and was bugged that I forgot to bring something to read. At least I accomplished something during my hour wait.

There is not usually a particular time that strikes me as my "best time to write." I write at all different times and it just depends on my mood. I will say that I am usually more introspective and what not in the wee hours of the morning like you wrote last night. I write a little bit here and there for some online magazines, ezines, etc. and I just write whenever I feel like I have something to contribute or need a few extra bucks.

Late night is my favorite time. The house is quiet, the kids and husband are in bed, no ringing phone or anything else to compete with what I'm doing. Besides, if I write just before sleeping, I wake up with new ideas.

I never thought of that, writing just before bed will help me to come up with new ideas in my sleep. I must try that.

Its a great idea to write when you are not sleeping. Its a good way to go back to sleep. My mother, who doesnt write much anymore, once wrote a poem about her inspiration waking her up at night to write! *L* I write whenever. Mostly poetry now but working on freelance stuff. ONE day I hope to publish stuff. I pretty much write when I have time. Once my job kicks in, I hope to set up a real schedule for stuff like writing and exericise again. Right now it has been trying to find a job and trying to heal my ankle and feel better (cold for a week now ICK!). I have been successfully keeping a diary though each night since December of last year! Hurray for me! I havent done one every day for ages :))

i prefer to do writing in the early morning when i'll have fresh ideas, i will be free from all troubles. my mind wouldn't be contradicting with some other thing. i can put my all concentration only in the early morning. i'll be free of disturbances. i'll have new ideas at every new day. i have written so many poems at that time, enjoying the nature, sounds of birds, bell sound from the milkman, watching the woman those who are decorating their veranda with colorful rangolis.... very rarely i have written thriller stories, the best time for that is my sleepless night. wheneveri met terrific incident, i write them as thriller stories by adding spices to them

the best time of the day for writing, for me, is at night, between midnight and 4 am. It is the time I write better, more, perhaps it is the silence, I usually works better when I have silence, a lot of it.

I also am most productive near midnight. I have stayed up until 6 am a few times writing away in my la-la-land. :-) I seem to have3 fewer distractions late at night, such as daughter or hubby. But that darned cat, he stays right under me until I go to bed. :-D

I can't tell you how many articles or books on writing I've read that suggest getting up early in the morning to write for a few hours. I would never get anything written if I followed this advise. I usually write very late at night, but that's my natural body rhythm I think.

Best time for me is when I have the correct inputs and the mood to write. It is just combination of both. Involvement actually paves way to success. The output comes good. LOOK, THINK, and SUGGEST

I like to write late at night, about 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. My next favorite time is late morning. Having quiet and not being errupted helps.

Wow, did you feel any pain after writting that 15 page story. I guess the best tiem to write is when you are motivated and ideas just kept flowing through. Most of the time I write better when I am in pain or theres hurt. The best time of the day ofr me is early morning or late evening.

Yes, writing can be a distraction from the pain, as long as I'm not writing about the pain. LOL!

Hi patgalca, I write when the mood hits me. The bad part about that is, it's usually around midnight or later. I find when I can't sleep, if I'll get up and freewrite, I write my best. There are no distractions and you can really get tied up into a good 'yarn' or character. It's when my mind is most active like that, that I right my best work.

I too find my best time for writing is at night. Sometimes I will think of a poem during the day right in the middle of doing something at work and I just have to sneak a minute to write it down. I can sit on the wekend when I have time with paper and pencil in hand and not think of a thing. Somtimes my minds idea of creative time can be frustrating.

Nice time to write is at night, yes it is, where your mind starts wandering and thinking, and your hand starts to move the pen a write on a blank paper. But sometimes you cannot stop your mind to think or condition it to give you ideas to write for at night. Sometimes it just comes, it might be during lunchtime or even a coffee break. Do what I do, I always have a small pad and pen ready in my bag, and whenever I need to write down anything, I just pop those things out. Once an idea passes, it is quite hard to recall it later in its richest version. Cheers!

The best time to write is the time that you have no distractions. It doesn't matter what time of day it is, but you shoudl get into a habit of making it the same time each day. Just like your pets and your children, if you makes something a habit and you do it everyday, you will find that you are more in the mood when that time comes around and your creativity will surge. By setting a schedule for your ceative time your mind will get to know when to kick it into overdrive and it will get easier and easier to write at that same time each day. Your mind is like any muscle in your body, it needs exercise and the more consistent exercise it gets the better it works. Personally, I like right after dinner at night, somewhere between 6:30 and 8PM until about 10PM. It may only be a couple hours, but if I can get rid of distractions I can be very productive.

Don't you just love when that happens. I have had alot of trouble sleeping lately and find that the middle of the night works well for me. Everybodies sleeping and I don't have many distractions. Lately though I have had a serious case of wroters block -wroters hmm I like it.

there is not a particular time of writing like latenight ,early morning or so . i think we should write when our mind is fresh or there is a sudden start of our mind because these are the two condition when you can write from your heart and that can make you able to a good story.......
