Are You Concerned About The Safety Of The Fresh Food You Purchase?

I am really getting concerned about all the food recalls lately. I am scared to eat anything that I purchase. Last year, an E. coli outbreak from fresh spinach killed three people and sickened nearly 200 others in 26 states and temporarily took fresh spinach off shelves nationwide. The recent outbreaks have raised concern about the safety of the food supply. "The food supply in the United States remains one of the safest in the world," the FDA's David Acheson, MD, said at a news conference. I for one am really concerned about the safety of the food that I am purchasing. One of the things that we can do help keep our family safe is to wash all fresh food before we eat it. Also wash your hands before and after you have washed the fresh foods. Today the FDA advised the food producers and handlers to improve food safety. You can read more about the news conference here: http://www.webmd.com/news/20070312/fda-sets-fresh-produce-safety-rules?ecd=wnl_cbp_031307 Are you concerned about the safety of the food that you purchase?

I get so worried about that stuff sometimes. You never know who has been handling the apples, you don't know if anyone washed their hands before fondling the plums. About the only fresh fruit I don't get weird over is a bunch of bananas. Nature packaged them just right!

Yes, but frankly, I'm more concerned about the meat than vegetables. Considering how many hormones are shot into the animals we consume, I think that's more dangerous. I was a vegetarian for several years and I wish I could get back to that.

I find myself very concerned about the safety of the fresh food I purchase. Because of all of the food warnings and reports of people dying from eating certain foods that have been tainted with something I try to wash all the food I eat. Of course, you can't wash everything you eat but I find vegetables and meat are the ones that have the most risk of being contaminated with something that could possibly make me sick. I find that every time that I buy prebagged salad or even any piece of meat before I prepare it or cook it I have to wash it first. I get people calling me a germophobe or paranoid. I'd much rather be safe than lying in bed sick because I ate a piece of meat that was contaminated with e.coli or something like that. I have to wash food items because I don't want the risk of eating contaminated meat or vegetables on my mind. I'd rather know the salad or carrots or pork chops I'm cooking are free from contaminants than eat dinner being worried if I'm going to feel terrible afterwards. I heard the horror stories of tainted meat or vegetables making it into the food chain. Whenever that happens I get very worried that me or one of my loved ones will be the next victim of that tainted food item. That's enough to make someone go that extra step to ensure that they were completely safe from any of those food born diseases. I've seen people I care about get sick from eating food that was undercooked and it's made me be a little more aggressive in the way that I clean the food we buy. I find that food tastes better when it's washed or rinsed than to just leave it the way it is out of the package. I have found personally that even in the prebagged salads that it tastes strange when you don't rinse it off. I kind of wish that corporations and meat companies would prewash those salads and somehow find a way to clean meat off before packaging it for individual sale instead of leaving it up to the consumer to do. If there was no way to wash the fresh food we bought then I would most likely not keep the vegetables or meat. I would take them back and go to a buy those items from another supermarket and hope I could save a few more dollars. I love the ability to get the proper price for what I spent and if I can save a few dollars by buying generic items, then that's what I'll do. In conclusion, I am really conscious of the freshness of a lot of my food and no matter what I wash all of it before it even hits the freezer or the fridge. I want my family to be safe from contaminants and I will do whatever is necessary to achieve that. Food should be safe in general! Though it seems these days it is becoming less safe more & more! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

Sometimes I do worry about the safety of the food I purchase. I mean, how hard is it to make sure the food is not substandard, but of the highest quality? I don't understand how these people can feel perfectly ok with sending food out to stores that just may make someone ill or worse, kill.

Food safety definitely runs through my mind a lot. I was a victim of food poisoning in sixth grade, and that really got me started on making sure foods are thoroughly cooked, isn't past its expiration date, etc. I make sure to wash fresh foods before eating them. I think having that experience made me more cautious, but I haven't been too afraid.

The problem with the e coli in leafy greens is that it is a systemic contamination. It has been in the water that they take up into their leaves, and it cannot be washed off.It has grown in. I do not know about what causes the problem in green onions, but they have been implicated more than once also. I personally am going to grow more of my greens this year.

I am concerned especially all the contaminated food coming out of california, I don't know what is happening so I am careful not to by the products in question. I don't really have to buy those products there are plenty of others around, and I buy canada first because that is where I live.

We don't live super clean like some do so we are a bit less concerned about germs and such. We grow most of our vegetables and cook the rest. If any of us were ever comfortable with others growing, handling and packing and shipping and then unpacking and handling our foods for others to handle until purchase, then you just didn't think about it much. Something can go wrong at any step in that long process. Washing does make good sense and don't know why more people don't think of it. I say things are only going to get more interesting from now on.

Many years ago I learned that if you wash produce, including leafy greens, in water containing a few drops of chlorine bleach per gallon (4 L) you can prevent many problems, including cholera.

Yes, especially leery of the leafy plants.. and the loose leafy plants more so than, say, a head of lettuce.. We've been blessed here so long.. it's sad to see so much deteriorating..

It seems the safety of the food in the States is getting worse. They are playing around with the food chain and one of these days it is going to backfire. The States used to have the safest food around. Now I'm glad I don't live there anymore. Listening to the news is enough to make anyone nervous. They don't even label the food if it is a GM product.

Food from factory farms, especially in California, is a great concern. If you buy fresh. local produce you are much better off. I buy at local faarmers' markets from local organic farms and know that the food has been raised with care, so it is much less likely to cause diseases.

Yes, I am very concerned. To be honest, I haven't purchased bagged salad or salad ingrediants since this all took place. I am eating more canned fruits and vegetables till summer arrives and I can purchase home grown vegetables locally. You gave some very good information in this discussion. Thank you.
