Is Information Technology protecting your privacy, or is taking it away?

I was thinking about the other day. Maybe I could be better far away somewhere on Tropical Island, where zaba search wouldn’t know anything about me and wouldn’t publish it either. I don’t know who to contact to have my name taken off from zaba. This is just one example. I used to have one email that was getting over 1000 messages per day. Every day in my mailbox I can find local advertising that I have to recycle. I have to shred credit card offers. I have local flyers at my doorstep, car windshield and mailbox. To manage it all, I have to spend few hours a week. My parents were listed in local phone book and only mail they ever get was private mail. The only people who could invade into their privacy were Sunday boy selling farmers eggs. How can we protect our privacy?

I have 6 email accounts, with 4 being really active. Almost every account is used for a specific purpose and has different spam filtering settings. My primary email address looks like a password itself (some people find that funny), just to prevent it from being randomly generated by spam software. I heard about zaba search a while ago, it is actually scary and I am really glad that it does not cover Canada. Though, I think that sooner or later we will be included in that monster as well. Another privacy issue comes from us posting on different forums on the internet. We generally leak a lot of private information about ourselves and we generally don't realize it as this is done over hundreds, if not thousands of posts. Now, I intentionally delete many messages from some forums occasionally in order to protect my privacy.

I don't have much private information on forums that I have to worry about, thank you for email tips.

You certainly are harrassed. I don't have any such problems, only a few unwanted adds, mostly for credit cards, and the odd unsolicited e-mail. I guess living in Thailand could have a lot to do with it. I'm registered with a few survey sites, but they're not particularly interested in me either. I don't have a clue how you can deal with it. I've not heard of zaba search, and I don't think I want to. Good luck on your desert island. Don't forget your apple!

I think I read someone's discussion here about him finding his information publicly online. Yahoo has a WhoIS program that shows who lives where but I don't know about any other info. I think IT actually disclose our info more than protecting it. Yes if I remember correctly, this person lives in the US

what a nice image..."Sunday boys selling farmer'e eggs"...I can picture this image of quiet everyday life!!! Oh I do agree with you,....sometimes we are overwhelmed by technology and its power...think about that we can be under control each moment of our lives...our phones can be listened, our mails opened...our position on earth while driving can be signalled!!! oh I can remember myself fighting for my privacy with my brothers...do not open my diary, do not read my mails..I cannot even imagine my brothers opening my mails and now we all know that strangers can do this with our emails!!! however, this is the other face of progress and we have to accept the good and the bad...but we can struggle against its power...and try to protect from invading presence...pay attention when asked for opinions or signatures, when entering web sites and so on...by the way, what is zaba? forgive me for my ignorance!!!

Zaba is people locator in USA. You can locate anyone in USA by name. They have so called public records. Some are not accurate, but addresses are. So, all of my addresses are listed including years. This is open entry for identity theft. Also, I have former boyfriend who was very obsessive and I was happy for while that he can't find me.

well i just answered your last post about the real id act. my opinion is that information technology is not at all protecting my privacy, it is surely taking that away from me.

We are quite lucky in the UK that we have laws that prevent folks from sending us rubbish in the post ... and we also have laws to reduce to a minimum cold calling and telemarketing .. I think in America it's pretty impossible to get your names removed from any search web sites like Zaba and White Pages because there are no laws to prevent personal information from being public knowledge ..
