long distance online relationships

I have always believed that it takes a whole lot of drive and commitment to make long distance relationships work. But the scenario I always had in mind was two people who know each personally and got separated and communicate despite the distance.
But what about relationships wherein you have never met the person face-to-face and rely on the power of the internet? What are your thoughts on online relationships? Is there a specific number of months or years that the relationship should be at for it to be called a serious relationship?

I used to believe online relationships don't really work, and in a few instances it could only last for a couple of months then fades out... but one of my girlfriend's colleagues in her previous job is now in Scotland after she got married to her fiance whom she met online... it took them only a year or so before they ended up in the aisle for marriage.
that then proved me wrong... :P

that's nice to hear. most people generally scoff at online relationships. i just think it might not be for everyone, but for a selected few it can work.
my aunt got married to a guy in sweden she met online a few years ago. and now she says she's never been happier. ;p
