For the past month every day when I come home from work my left ankle is swollen. I am not doing anything different from what I have been doing the past 4 years. I have an office job and I do sit at a desk most all day. I make it a point to get up every hour and walk through the building and stand for at least 5 minutes. I drink the same amount of water as I have always drank, about 60 ounces a day. I stay on a low carb diet and I do a little exercise each day. What could be causing this? And why is it just one ankle? Should I seek medical help or is it just something I am going through with changes in my body? Any suggestion would be most appreciated.

I would have it checked out. I few years ago I had some swelling in my ankles but it did't hurt so I did not bother but when it would not go away I had it checked and mine was called edema and I had high blood pressure. I also had an office job .

I was concerned this may have something to do with my blood pressure or heart. I did check mine just to be safe and it is normal. The odd thing is it is only one ankle not both.

I have been having the same problem. Just one ankle. I have high blood pressure and take HCTZ for it. My blood pressure has been a little high lately. Also I have vericose veins in both legs but more so in the swollen leg. My Dr. thought it was gout but a blood test ruled that out. A vein x-ray showed I have a leaky vein. Basically the blood flow down is good but the going back up leaks back. This is the cause of my swelling. I have to take arthritis medicine that is an anti-inflammitory. It helps with the swellinmg and the pain. I was taking Celebrex but he took me off that and put me on Mobic. Please go and see the doctor, better safe than sorry.

It's hard to say without any additional info. Some people that I know that have this problem have it because they are overweight. It could also be fluid buildup. As to if you should go to the doctor - does it hurt? If so, I'd go in and have it looked at. If you have health insurance I'd go anyways, cause you never know! Otherwise, look it up on webMD and see if you have any other symptoms.

Thanks. I did try to look it up and it all it said was elevate your ankle above your heart. duh! LOL I do have insurance and no it doesn't hurt at all, it just looks terrible. I am a little over my ideal weight, which happens every winter, I am hoping to drop it this month. It is only 10 pounds but maybe that is the problem.

this is something called lymphatic oedema. this happens quite often to women. nothing to worry, you are just doing right in walking intermittently, just increase the frequency and do it more often. but if you have it on both ankles then it might be due to antihypertensive medication (if atall you take). in that case see a physician. good luck Courtesy: DR S KUNDU Consultant Cardiologist

I do recline the leg after work and it does make the swelling go down. I only have it in one ankle so I think it must not be meds. I need to buy a recliner then I would never want to get up. My Mother has always said vinegar would take swelling out as well, but I hate the smell. Wish they could give it a better aroma. I will try the vinegar, water, honey drink though. Thank you for all your help.

hope the followings will help aswell: Sit back in a reclining chair with your legs up to help reduce a swollen ankle. Use leg cushions , including leg and bed wedges and leg elevators. Buy proper fitting shoes and socks that don’t leave red marks behind to help ease a swollen ankle. Vinegar, preferably cider, works well for swelling and headaches sore cuts etc: the most effective cure as it is pure apple cider vinegar. it is also a wonderful pick me up to have a glass of water a teaspoonful of honey and a spoonful of vinegar - a wonderful beginning to every brand new day.

THis could be due to a high protien diet . There are alot of puriens in protien and sometimes it is hard on your kidneys. Try to find a registered massage therapist that knows how to do lymph drainage. Your lymphatic system may need a "wake up". Unlike blood that gets pumped through the body by the heart, you lymph relies on muscle contraction to move around the body. If you can't find someone that does drainage, alot of times a few good massages or raindrop therapy can help as well. I would cut back on the protien and go for a more balanced diet. Just my humble opinion as a therapist and wholistic practitioner.

GREAT! Thanks for your input. I think we do have a massage therapist that does lymph drainage. I will give her a call. I would much rather have a massage than to take meds. I will cut back on the protein and see if that helps too. You should have never told me you were a therapist now I will be seeking free advice all the time. LOL

I have had the same exact problem.. I went to doc and he did test for blood clot and I didn't have one. Ankle went down after 2 days of not walking on it and taking water pill. Now it has happened again. I am a hairstylist and stand alot. but only my right ankle is swollen.. Did you ever find out anything??????

Swelling usually indicates poor circulation. It is possible you could have pulled a mussel or maybe arthritus. I wouldn't get to worried if it was for 1 or 2 days but anything more than 3 days I'd get checked. You say this has been on going for the past month and I think you should see your doctor. About 2 weeks before my heart attack I noticed swollen ankles and that is something I have never had unless I got hurt. Therefore I'm thinking get it checked, it's probably not serious at this point but may get worse. I'd like to see you have it looked at. Please let me know how you're doing... Take Care

Thank you I will let everyone know how the Dr. visit turns out. I was wondering if it can have anything to do with blockage around the heart. I sure hope not. i feel great, but I do know a blockage can be sudden or slow.

Get in to be checked because a person just doesn't know. I didn't think there was anything wrong with me either till the day of my heart attack. Like I said it's probably nothing now but get checked to see.

I had a friend that had this happen for a few days and the only thing it was related to was her birth control pills or PMS. After a few days the swelling went down. This may not help but it's the only thing I've heard of.

Thanks, that can't be it though. I am not on the pill and I have had a hysterectomy. I am on hormone pills though, maybe that could be the problem. I have been on them for 9 years.

Is it just only the left one? And the right one is OK? Does it hurt also? I guess you should see a doc and let make a radiograph of your ankle. Listen to my story. Couple of years ago when I was on my way home from work I felt that something is wrong with my right ankle. I didn't pay much attention to the little pain but at home it went worse with every minute, until I couldn't put my foot down anymore. It was swollen also. I couldn't even touch it, it did hurt so badly. At least, when the pain grew unbearable I called an ambulance. The doctor came and said, I have probably a fracture. I didn't believe it. They took me to the hospital, gave me some strong injections and made an X-ray. Then they discovered I have an osteophyte there. It looked so small on the picture that I couldn't believe that something so small may cause such an enormous pain. But so it was. I got a couple of injections more and was released. I can't remember anymore what I got against pain but it was very strong and made me very sleepy. So I just slept couple of days and rested my foot until the pain was gone. It's curious but the pain never returned, luckily. If it does then I'll know, it's just the osteophyte, and I will be not so scared anymore. Perhaps you also have one? If you have, a radiograph will show it. The swelling has to be caused by a local reason, if there were changes in your body, your both ancles would be swollen, I guess.

Yes it is only the left ankle and that is why I think it must be just something wrong with that ankle and not my whole body. I will seek medical attention.

I do think you should see a doctor because your sitting at your desk all day and that right there is a problem because you could get blood clots in the legs and that has been on tv telling us to be careful. So I think you should have it checked out. Let us know what is going on.

Constant swelling of your ankle is not part of your body changing. You may have a greenstick fracture and you are irritating it from healing. Get to your doctor right away and get an xray gefore you do more damage to your ankle..

First off, sorry that your ankle is not feeling well, my suggestion since it's been a few days is to call your doctor and ask. When all else fails and no one can seem to lead me in the right direction, I always end up calling the advice nurse and she determines what I should do.. My personal opinion, I would ask if you changed your shoes..sometimes that can be a issue Good luck and hope you feel better...

Most of the people don't know that our ankles and knees are related with our emotional ego and self respect. During life when ever we faced the issues related with self respect and emotions we just got disturbances! and then we just put those things behind ... I mean as a pending item/s which should be resolve at that time with a common sense or deep understanding! As a healer i can suggest that if you can reopen your emotional wounds to dissolve then there is a possibility of healing the ankles! I think that at first you will not believe in this but if you think quitely then you will find that so many emotional hurts and unresolved issue are remaining there which are just creating swelling ... Its up to you now to deal with your self: you can deal with this using mirror talk with yourself. I have written a note on that here on mylot one of discusion is regarding that just read and try to get your own ways to create inside healing avenues!

So you are saying stress can cause this swelling? That makes sense, but I would have thought it would have been all over my body rather than just one ankle. I will read what you written on here.

Several years ago I have very similar symptoms. I went and had an xray done and found out I had a slight hairline fracture. You might want to do the same.

Just a couple of thoughts, and I may be way off, here, so don't freak. Do you cross your legs when you sit? Could this be a sign of a blood clot? I'm in NO WAY qualified to tell you what's wrong, but these thoughts came to my mind when I read your post. Also, my dad has gout and is now on medication for it. Before he was diagnosed, he felt a LOT of pain in his foot, to the point where even having the bedsheets on his toes kept him awake. Best to have this checked, dear. Good luck!

No I usually do not cross my legs at my desk, I have my feet either on the floor or tucked in on the bottom of my chair. You know years ago I had something calle polycythemia vera, which caused blood clots. It is where the red blood cells over produce. I thought gout probably hurt since it is the swelling of the actual joint. I don't freak easy but thanks for the concern.

Thank you for that information. I hate meds, but the oil I can do. So gout does not hurt? It just swells? Then I guess I do need to let a Dr. check it out.

I would get it checked. Sometimes low carb diets can cause problems with gout, usually that involves the foot too though. Have you ever had any problems with arthritis?
@wmg2006 (5381)

Only arthritis I have ever had is in my knees caused by mutliple surgeries, scar tissue. I thought it would ache or hurt if it was arthritis. I had no idea low carb would cause gout. Thanks for that information. I have found on my low carb diet I lose better if I eat small amounts of carbs on the week-end and none during the week. I have been doing for years and I lost 97 pounds and have kept it off, but I had leg cramps when I did not eat any carbs.

If it is swelling then I surely think you should see a doc immediately. It doesn't look like a "over a period" change at all and could be something which needs medical attention. Please see a doc wmg,who will be more qualified than any one of us in assisting or advising you.

You are right, I was hoping somone here would be able to tell me something like oh it is no problem it just happens. LOL I hate to pay the $40.00 to see the Dr. for them to put on something like steriods that will cause me to bloat up, which seems to be their cure for eveything. I am sure I will go to the Dr. soon though.

I believe you should have a doctor check it out. It might be in something you ate that you got that kind of allergic reaction or an insect bit you without you knowing it. Try twisting and turning it like an exercise or put a cold compress on it.

I would be concerned about circulation problems in that foot. Is it swelling, so that if you push down on it, the finger print remains there for a few seconds and it gets white before it vcomes back to original state. Is the foot colder or warmer then the other foot? Is the swollen area tender or is there a temperature difference there?
@wmg2006 (5381)

14 Mar 07
I did do this finger press thing and yes it does keep the imprint for a few seconds. It turns white, it is not colder or warmer than the other ankle. The swollen area is not tender unless it gets real big then it is just uncomfortable.

Although I wouldn't want to alarm you I would certainly advise going to a physician about this.. It can be many things from simple to complex.. Any swelling in our bodies that lasts over a week or so and has no "injury" attached to it, should be investigated...It sounds like you do everything right...it's really good that you get up once an hour and stroll...we all should remember that sitting for over an hour at a time isn't the best thing for our bodies...circulation is sooooo important...The only thing I can think of that would be obvious..would be any new shoes being worn in this time frame? I know a friend of mine got a new height of heel and it began a tissue "issue" in her foot that involved swelling... No pain? NO twinges?...Best of luck...let us know..:)..back to bed with me and my pneumonia!!!!

I have had problems in the past with new shoes. I went to the Dr. and he noticed right off my shoes were new, he asked if I only wear those or do I change into my old ones. I told him no I had bought 3 pair of new shoes and changed between them. He knew then what was wrong, it was my back though. He told me this was not good, to try to break in several pair of new shoes at one time. It is best to wear new shoes a few hours and always change back to the old ones for the remainder of the day until I break in the new ones. But this time there are no new shoes involved.
