what is St. Patrick's Day?

i'm from the Philippines and i've been reading some this-and-that's about St. Patrick's Day. I just wonder why this particular holiday looks like a real big celebration to Americans. what is St. Patrick's Day?

mamu, its not even american its an irish celebration. if i havent read some of the comments i would have said its an american celebration too,lol! all i know is, St.Patrick cards have four leaf clovers in them which signifies luck; a pot of gold which signifies wealth; color green which signifies growth...if you put it in context: it's a day where you wish you get lucky to have struck gold by wearing green...LOL!!!
