The year two thousand... Shouldn't it be Twenty-Hundred?

I don't know if anybody has ever thought about this in as much detail as I have... but it is irritating me that ever since we switched over to this "new" millenium, we are referring the years as "thousands" rather then "twenty hundreds". Case in point 1908- was not referred to as "ninteen thousand and eight" What im wondering, is if this continues, will 2999 be called "Two thousand nine hundred and ninety nine"? or will people have changed it back to it's old ways and go back to it being referred to as "Twenty nine ninety nine".
