Who should open the door when the guest is leaving? Host or Guest?

I am wondering who should open the door when the guest leaves his host's place. Should the host lead his guest to the door or should he politely follow his guest to the door to close it after the guest leaves? Is there a code of conduct or whoever happens to be closer to the door should handle it?

I think that it has a lot to do with how formal of a situation that it is. If the guest is a boss or someone of importance then you should open/close the door for your guest. If your friends that always come over to your house are leaving your house, then I think that they should be able to open/close the door themselves.

At my house it doesn't really matter. I do think it's polite to open the door though. Whenever my boyfriend's grandmother comes to visit and she's leaving I always open the door for her. But when my friends have popped in for a visit and they're leaving I generally just walk behind them..interesting topic!

I think it all depends on the situation. If you have informal visitors, like friends, they can open the door for themselves. In every other case it would be courteous to open the door yourself.

Interesting topic lol. Usually if I have strangers in my home, whether it be salesmen or guys that come to fix the Cable box and so on, I usually open the door for them.
However, if it's friends that popped in for a coffee, I usually just follow them to the door lol.
I've never really thought about having a code of conduct or not before. It's just always been the way I've done things.

Well, there is no really code of conduct with regards to opening the door. If you want to become a gentleman and want to show of with your girlfriend, you should be the first one to open. But it doesn't really matter if the guest or host. If the host open it, there is no problem. may be he just wants to be polite and courteus. If the guest opens the door, that wont be a problem either. Goodluck!
