Do you check your grocery shopping receipts!

I usually laugh because my partner ALWAYS scrutinises the receipt before we leave the shop - a bit extreme I used to think but now I am coming round to his way of thinking. More than half the time we have been overcharged, sometimes by pennies and sometimes considerably more! Do you check your receipts to see you have been correctly charged or not? Have you had this type of experience? Did they refund the money ok? Or do you just think this is a silly post?

I don't always check my receipt because I watch as things get scanned. If I see an error, I'll tell the checkout person right away. But I do like to look at the receipt at the part that says 'you saved this much today' by using my shopper card. That part makes me happy!

I also watch as my items ring up but I also check at the end when I leave just to make sure, but I am also on a tight budget

Due to a severe sight loss, I need to take my reciept home and wait for my hubby to check it for me when he gets in from work. The only other way I've found around that is to have them say each item and the cost as it goes through and there are only one or two checkout operators willing to take the time to tell me that, some just don't have the patience to help me. I know the times I have been overcharged I've gone back the next day with the item and the reciept and they've willingly paid me back, which is good and no, I don't think this is a silly post at all :)

Thank you hookfan - it upsets me to hear that the cashiers do not take the time to help you! I think you should speak to management at the store and ask what their policy is...

I usually don't. I know, I should because mistakes happen, but it's just not in my character to go over the entire grocery list and every reciept I get to make sure I was charged the amount I should have been. My grandmother however, is completely and utterly obsessed with saving money. Every purchase she makes, she has to go over the list again and again to make sure she was charged the right amount. If she even THINKS that something may have been a mistake, she'll take it up with a manager. It drives me nuts.

I got in the habit of checking my receipt when I lived down in Texas and went to a grocery that offered the guarantee "If it rings up incorrectly, it's free." It was a matter of paying attention to the price tags on the shelf (particularly the specials) and then remembering the prices at checkout. It really paid off to do so-- I remember getting a $26 bag of cat food, two $11 bottles of olive oil, and an expensive bag of cherries for free, all because they didn't ring up at the sale price. So no, it's not a "silly" post, at all.

That would be nice to have a store like that here. I went somewhere and bought a video game and the price rung up $20 more. If I had not paid attention to the price sticker on the shelves before hand I would have paid $50 instead of $30.

I don't normally check my receipts. I like to do a rough tally (if possible) of the amount I am expecting to pay at the cashier. I would only scrutinize if I find the figures are too far off. ;P

Well I certainly do not think it is a silly Post as I have to be honest and admit that I do not normally check my Receipts and I know I should as my Daughter keeps telling me of for it. I glance at it when I get home but I guess if I found anything wrong then it would be to late. I really do have to try and start checking it.

Mostly I do. I always like to make sure what was supposed to be on sale was and see what other savings I might have gotten and didn't know about. I also like to make sure that I really did buy everything that I thought I was buying. I have had occasion to walk through the store and look at something, get distracted, and then go on thinking that I had put it in my basket.

i always check the receipts when i get home. one time i found out that a can (about 1kg) of milk had not been charged. i was so afraid that my daughter might suffer from stomach upset if i don't go back to the grocery store to pay for it.LOL. the debate on my mind about whether or not i should go back (the grocery is a bit far) to pay for that milk bothered me until the next day. i told a co-worker about it and he told me that if i go back to complain about it, the cashier might be fired from her job due to negligence. if i just shut up, the lady would still have a decent job and the multi-billionaire who owns that grocery store will not even notice that he lost 600pesos (about $12).

I think this happened to my mom a few times but she let it go cause they also overcharged or charged us wrong for stuff and those she let go too. She called it even. Its better to let it go once you leave the store I guess...

It is unusual to happen this way - if I noticed it I would have paid the bext time I was in but then again the uk have employment laws that would have prevented the cashier from losing her job for one mistake - don't beat yourself up over it jojogirl!

Sometimes it is too awkward to check it while still in the store, if you find amistake when you check it at home would you contact the store and tell them? xx

I always check mine I have been double charged to many times. If they make a fuss about it I just remind them the are not the only store in town, and it is a small town so word of mouth gets around fast. That usually changes their tune in a hurry

I try to check the receipt in the store but I don't always do it. Instead I'll usually check it in my car before I drive away or while I'm walking to my car. I don't often find mistakes though. If there is mistake I will often catch it at the register before I pay.

Now that tells me you are a very sensible person ma belle! When I could still drive I always forgot to do this and had to resort to driving all the way back or calling them and taking the receipt in the next time I went! xxx

Hi I always check as I take the items from the bag. Many times that thing on sale was charged the regular price. They also sometimes scan the same item twice.I call the store right up.I know everybody that works where I get grocies so it's never a problem. Not silly hon We work hard for our pennies and after all they are ours. r

Thanks Rayden, I'm glad that you have no problem getting the refund! sometimes here the cashiers act as though we are taking money out of their pockets when we point out the overcharging!

yes i will definitely check my grocery shopping receipts. i didn't used to as i thought we wouldn't get overcharged. however, there were a few times my partner pointed out wrong pricing or additional items we didn't purchase. after that i made it a point to check my receipts always. not just grocery shopping receipts, but restaurant receipts as well. there were times when there was an additional dish or two in our bill which we didn't order at all. i usually manage to get a refund as they understand the system is not fool-proof. it pays to be careful. cheers ;p

I am glad you have started checking as although it may not be much at one time the amount you are overcharged can build up! My Grandma went shopping with us the other week and bought my daughter 2 tops in the supermarket, when we checked her receipt she had been charged for 3 - it can be very frustrating! Hugs xxx

Yes I used to check my receipt because I have encountered the same situation as yours. Sometimes I've been overcharged. But sometimes I tend to forget to check my receipt.

I do a once a month large order, then pick up what I need day by day. On my daily trips I don't check the list seeing as it's only 3 or 4 items, but on the large order I check everything.

Ever since one time I went shopping and I got double charged for a computer program and when the total was more than I thought it should be I quickly got it corrected. They refunded me the money and Now everytime I go shopping I kind of figure the total in my head and after I get the reciept I go down the list to be sure nothing was entered incorrectly.

my mother used to do that, she had this weird sense that something was wrong and shed go back in and tell them they needed to relook over the receipt. being teenages that usually ring up the items id give slack, because most dont stay with the store for long, and half the time theyre new

I have had a few overages, but I also check for undercharges, because I'm a fairminded person. I actually try to watch them ring up the stuff. Alot of them get to talking and don't pay attention to whether or not something scanned. And I keep an eye on prices, but with a 3 year old, its not easy to always do that. lol.

I don't think I ever have... guess I usually just trust the cashier to get it right. But it might be better for me to do a tally in the head before going through. Good thought!
