I feel like I'm stuck in the middle.

I love all my family. My extended family and my immediate family. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm stuck in the middle of them all. My mother and father feel that they have little in common with the rest of the family (it is a BIG extended family) so they don't make the effort to come to many family functions. I enjoy the functions until it comes time for the questions."So, why aren't your parents here?" "I haven't seen your Mom and Dad in ages. Are they coming tonight?" Then I have to think of excuses. (Some are legitimate as Dad is a pastor and often has other committments.)
I can't tell people that they didn't want to come. That would cause friction in the family.
I bring my husband and kids to the gatherings and have a lot of fun except for this part of the night. Am I the only one that gets stuck in the middle?
