How does the real King Leonidas of Sparta compare to his portrayal in the movie "300"?

The real king leonidas would have had no issues about slavery and freedom. the movie conveniently fails to mention the fact that the spartans themselves had slaves, the Helots. When sparta was once expanding it's territory it decided to conquer Messenia and convert the entire population into slaves. (the helots later became the reason for sparta's military drive. Their culture of "total-war" came after a huge slave revolt that came at the same time as an earthquake instilled fear in spartan hearts. knowing that the citizen-slave ratio was a 1 is to 10, the spartans were under perpetual threat and under the leadership of Lycurgus decided to rehash their entire society to cope with that threat).

I agree with you. Anytime a movie portrays an historical event true history students will check for the accuracy of the movie.

I think that even if this movie can be object of negative critics, although it is a way to remember this real historical fact and Leonida's heroes. I think that also comics have something to teach.

Thanks for your comment! I agree that it helps bring history to those who might not even know about it. What a true history student should do is check to see if the movie or comic is true to actually history.
