How does the real King Leonidas of Sparta compare to his portrayal in the movie "300"?

The real king leonidas would have had no issues about slavery and freedom. the movie conveniently fails to mention the fact that the spartans themselves had slaves, the Helots. When sparta was once expanding it's territory it decided to conquer Messenia and convert the entire population into slaves.
(the helots later became the reason for sparta's military drive. Their culture of "total-war" came after a huge slave revolt that came at the same time as an earthquake instilled fear in spartan hearts. knowing that the citizen-slave ratio was a 1 is to 10, the spartans were under perpetual threat and under the leadership of Lycurgus decided to rehash their entire society to cope with that threat).
