Very Concerned about My Newly Neutered Dog

Well as some of you might already know, I had my baby (Ike) in to be neutered yesterday. The procedure went fine but he doesn't seem like himself today. I understood that he'd probably be groggy and tired today, which he kind of is, but what's concerning me more is the fact that he's peeing in the house ( as he broke out of that stage a long time ago). I called the vet today and they said that he had been peeing on the floor all day at the clinic and they think it was just a nervousness thing. They had ruled out an infection because there was none of this behavior prior to going to the vet and they also took a blood sample from him because I chose to have pre-anesthetic testhing done. What kind of behavior did your dog have the day after being neutered? Any peeing in the house or unusal behavior? How long before it passed? What can I do to comfort him? I'm so scared that I made the wrong decision getting him neutered.. Could my dog still be feeling nervous even though he's home now?

My little dog was neutered in January. He, too, was very quiet. Usually, he is very active; but for weeks after, and even STILL, he is much quieter, more subdued. Once in a while, he will run around like his old self, but his overall personality is more toned down. When I discussed my concerns with the vet, they just said that he will be more quiet and calmer. So, I guess it is a normal reaction.

Neuturing a pet, especially the males, does help to calm them down. I was just thinking about that the other day after taking my little girl for a mile and a half walk up and down steep hills and then watching her run 6-7 laps around the large yard before going inside and running a couple laps in the house. She's only about 2-3 pounds and she basically trotted for the whole walk so I was amazed at her energy! I was wondering how worse she'd be if I hadn't of had her spayed 6 months ago.

First of all, you did not make a mistake by neutering your "baby". It is the healthiest thing you could have done for him. He may still be acting "funny" and peeing in the house because he is still in pain. It takes a while for animals to recover from this surgery. It's similar to you getting your tubes tied. It takes time. Give him a few days, at least, to start feeling better. We spayed both our cat and dog and they both took a few days to start acting a bt "normal" again. Take your dog outside, carefully, every couple hours or so so that he can try to do his thing outside. Other than that, baby him. Love him. And again don't worry, you made a great choice in neutering him.

Many years ago, when I get my cat neutered, he was acting just the same. This is real procedure and animals may experience pain.

I remembered my dog "Duke" I had him fixed and he was just a puppy and housebroken. After he was fixed I picked him up and he looked fine and yet he was still housebroken. I didn't have any problem with him.

My friend had her dog neutered at 3 years old. He seemed to be okay after with no peeing in the house or anything - although they did give him a collar to stop him licking his wound. I would suggest calling the vet back and demanding to know why he's doing this. Peeing at the vets is one thing (maybe fear), but he shouldn't still be nervous now he's in familiar surroundings again with his family. There may be another reason for it such as infection. Good luck in solving the problem quickly.

This what I found I hope it may help as my first thought was hormones affected by the neuting. Incontinence after neuter Q: I am in search of solutions to two problems that I am having with my 10 month old male pug "Pepper Boy". He is having a urine leak from his p*nis since approx. 1 month after he was neutered at 8 months. My local Vet. gave him a 2 week supply of antibiotics but this did not clear up the problem. The second problem is a bald spot that has developed on his shoulder. We have tried various creams but these have not helped. The Vet. thinks it is a fungus but can not rid him of it. Any help you could provide in solving these problems would be greatly appreciated. A: I guess I would be suspicious of hormonally based incontinence in a dog that developed urine leakage after neutering. Usually this will not occur this quickly and it isn't a common problem in male dogs but it just seems like a reasonable possibility once infection seems unlikely (the reason for the antibiotic treatment first). It is usually responsive to treatment with testosterone replacement and sometimes only a couple of injections are necessary to stave off the problem for long periods. It might be a good idea to take bladder X-rays to rule out bladder stones and consider a general chemistry panel to rule out causes of increased urination before attempting incontinence treatments. If your vet has taken skin scrapings from the sore and not found parasites then I have no other good suggestions for diagnosing this problem other than considering a skin biopsy if it won't clear up. They can be very helpful in difficult cases of skin disease. Mike Richards, DVM http://www.vetinfo.com/dincont.html#Incontinence%20after%20neuter

Yes i knew that you took "ike' to the vet to get neutered,we talked about that and how we hate to leave our babies...Poor "ike" i hate to have that done. I feel bad because it hurts them just like surgery hurts us...I don't think that sounds right him peeing on the floor,he is already trained.I do not think "ike" is nervous,he might be feeling bad or he could be hurting.Did they give you anything to give to him for Pain? I mean you know that has to hurt some...I just went now and talked to my husband because they had their dog done, thats before we married...He said that "ike" is probably a little sore but that he is not nervous, and that it should not make him pee all over the place,he thinks they did something wrong or something...I would call that vet back and find out "why "ike" is doing that, they should know, they do this surgery all the time and they should know if this is normal or not...My husband said his dog went outside to pee right after his surgery...Now Im sorta wondering ...Let me know how "ike " feels later..maybe it will get better in a couple of days..

The thing is, Ike was peeing at the vet both before and after took him in for the procedure. I believe them because when he got his shots done (I was there), he peed all over the table.

this is a timely post for me as I was thinking today that we have to get Jackie in to be neutered. He is a big boy (Husky) and if there are too many complications with behaviour after surgery it will be difficult to deal with. I am interested in reading all your replies. Thank you for the discussion.

Poor baby sounds like he is mad! My dog acted the same, he was mad at me for snipping the boys. LOL. He took a week or so to adjust before his behavior went back to the loveable dog he was. Just give him some time, it is hard for them to understand why they had to have the surgery, and he probably thinks he did something wrong. He is probably just frustrated.
