I think it is a toss up between a membership to a gym, a gift certificate at a beauty salon and a book that would be titled "How Can You Make Yourself More Likeable To Others."

Probably the most insulting is a book entitled " How to Survive Your divorce" (and this is your first marriage). Arggh..that will be something..lol

Most insulting gift which a mother-in-law can gift to a woman is another daughter-in-law. I mean if she brings another wife for her son and gifts him in front of her daughter-in-law ,it would be most heart breaking and no woman would be able to take that scene in her life.

I would have to say one of the following would be really bad:
A scale or anything to do with weight loss.
A self help book on hoe to be a better wife.
A cook book with the basic foods in it.

I am not sure (being a man), but my ex-wife (and myself, for several years) stopped speaking to my mother after she gave her her several of her own dieting books with the words "I thought you might find these useful. You should know that my son doesn't like overweight women."
Basically, I think anything that carries the implication "you need to change" is an insulting gift.

My Mum gave my wife a cookery book and my wife HATES cooking! The book did also feature sewing tips and other stuff like that, my wifes hobbies are marathon running, swimming and weight lifting! So it was not exactly her sort of thing!!!

Like 10 years ago my mother-in-law got my husband a credit card for him to use when he was in college. Anyhoo, she like maxed it out($1000) and after we got married she gave him the card back along with the statement for us to pay it off!!! Yeah, nothing says congratulations like a $1000 debt to be paid! We ended up getting a interest-free loan from my grandparents to pay it off because it was so far over the credit limit, anything we paid didn't make a dent in it! So, I would say that this is one of the worst gifts ever! But that is history now and she has MORE than made up for it! It's good that we have a great relationship and that I love kind-of like my own mom!
