What are some of the best breeds for showjumping? And, why are they better? Also, does mare/gelding/stallion make any difference, height, etc?

I'd say a typical showjumper would be a thoroughbred(mostly i have seen ages 14 and up ride TB's)-- they have a lot of stamina, they are usually pretty large and have good jumping legs on them (not to mention they can get pretty msucular) The gender doesn't make too much of a different except that stallions are often VERY high strung no matter what the breed, mares can be moody and geldings are usually the same no matter the time of the month. I'd say a good height for a showjumping horse would be around 16 hands-- for children id say around 14-15'3 hands... From my experience it seems thoroughbreds are great for hunter/jumpers. I've seen some small breeds do some incredible jumping though. My 1/2 arabian 1/2 hackney jumped a 4ft fence with ease! I don't think the gender of the horse makes a difference... it's the relationship between horse and rider that counts. Health of the animal and it's desire to do this type of work.
