What defines life? What is conciousness? These are the questions science must answer for us in what I think will be the next 'leap' in our knowledge of the universe. Some think science is declining in importance to us but I think just the opposite.. Consider this, people often consider death the end...but what were you before you were born? Were you alive? No correct? So you were dead and yet you came into life. What made you come into life? What really is our condition? Once we understand these things we will know who we are, we will know how to create artificial life, and we will know how to control life so it may last indefinitely. Who knows it may be possible to bring back the dead (sarcastic) . Science is the key for the development of our species into something more than just animals governed by natural laws, never lose faith in it because it has got us this far and hopefully it will take us much farther.

Oh geez..seeing all your answers up there made me think twice to respond. Anyway, i will answer your question with what i believe life is to me. I am not very scientific as my brain can't grasp all those coherence, teleportation stuffs you guys are talking about..forgive me. I'm content with my belief, that life is something that we borrowed and at end we give it back to its owner. So, i make the most out of my life. As the old saying goes, live life to the fullest. And with life, comes conciousness. We can't obtain conciousness if we don't have life (obviously). Men can use conciousness in anyway one wishes however will be responsible for it's consequenses. I wish i can have a better answer to your questions. (Sigh)

So basically you want our consciousness explained scientifically. Well, thats an interesting subject! Personally I like PenroseĀ“s theory about consciousness which uses quantum mechanics to explain it. They believe that our brain works like a quantum computer, and a quantum computer in principle could have the ability to generate unpredictable algorithms like if it is making decisions by itself. If it can make decisions maybe here lies the secret of our consciousness. In our cells, especially inside the axons and in the membrane there is a struture called microtubules. These would work like processors since it is believed that they can exibit a high degree of quantum coherence( it is needed for quantum computation to work).
