Choices or Forces?
Can we choose our choices, or do they choose us? Are there other bigger forces in control of our choices. Is it correct to say that if we believe we can really make our own decisions, we have too big an ego? If we accept that we are not entirely in control of our decisions, are we being humble and giving acknowledgment to the greater powers than ourselves?
Or am I missing something?
It feels like I shouldn't think the way I just did, because it didn't feel right to say that we are not responsible for our actions.

There is usually an interplay between the forces exerted on the individual by the outside and the force the individual exerts out of pure self determination. No one exists inside a vacuum and the landscape is always changing, year to year, day to day - even hourly or in the extreme case of very rapid ambient social/physical changes - minute by minute. Sometimes you are more in control than other times. It's all a matter of options, how many possible paths lay before you. At times there may be overwhelming forces acting against you and the choices are, for the time being, limited. Learning and self discovery tends to open up doors, allow for more and more choices, options & possibilities under any set of external circumstances. It is possible to walk this world and be unaffected, leave no footprints, yet exert a very powerful influence on it - but few people ever do this or even come close. Sometimes it is as if you stand on top of a hill or even a mountain, and as you gaze down you can see so many possibilities, all at your disposal. Other times, it's hard enough just to get through the day and you're glad to climb back into bed at the end of it! Like the lyrics in some old country song goes: "Sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug." But whatever the case, you are always responsible for making your own choices because even if there's just one option, you can always say "no", not act, or not decide, suffering the consequences or enjoying the benefits as a result - whatever the case may be. To be human is to be aware, self-aware and self-determining. We, are responsible for the choices we make each day and as time goes on the accumulated effects of such decision making define who we are, our character, our very nature. No one is ultimately and forever defined one way or another and anyone can change no matter who or what they are now. In the end, what's important is not what we think or feel, but how we act. Out actions in the world define us and give our life meaning. You can become anyone or anything you want, ultimately. Our species is in its infancy. The limits to human potential, if any, haven't even begun to be explored. There is no user manual that comes with the man suit you are currently wearing. My guess is that we can fly, literally! There is a way. We just have to believe it and start looking for the power switch inside somewhere.

i think choice and force are totally differfnt topics.choice is just like a group of option in our life. which gives help to do our work easily.but on the other hand by force we can do our work by our power.

I think, we must have the power to control our decisions. Choice is yours, you are not in control of choice. If it is that, you might be suffering from some type of mental problem (not any inteneion to say mad to anybody). If you want to make your career, then you must chose some thing.

I think that the choices we make create the situations that we face which then require more choices.
There are little choices, and then there are the bigger life altering choices.
You chose to obey the law, then that creates a set of events and choices to make.
If you choose a life of crime, that is a whole other set of events and choices.
Some choices can divert you from one path to another.
Marry the wrong person and have children. When that falls apart, there is a Completely different path than what you would have had if you had remained single.
While this could be construed as forces at work, I believe it is simply a matter of cause and effect.
Your choices determine how your life will be.

One of the things we are given by God is a FREE WILL. This means we truly have the freedom to choose to love God or not. God did not create little human robots so they'd love Him no matter what.
So we have the choice all the time. We have choices and nothing is by force. Are we talking like Star Wars force? We can make our own decisions.

we are responsible for our actions.. and always will be.. i believe in karma.. what you put out there comes back to you... any decision you make today affects your future... i still think we are in control of our destiny.. we can be who we want to be... :)

You seem a bit lost this time. Having made a choice on something only means that you are more confident of doing something. Choices are made everyday in life and no one forced you to make them. No ego here, its just confidence. People with big ego just "pop" and people with confidence, they go a long way.
Accepting decisions not made by ourselves, in strong words means being forced. But I think it doesn't mean we are humble or willing to give acknowledgment to greater powers. Like I said earlier on about confidence, you just let yourself be pushed around because you lack the confidence to make that change.

There are lots of things which is beyond our control and that's half part of our life. The other half, on the other hand, are the choices we made. With this choices we can either make our life better or worse depending how we live our life.
Whatever happens to us right now is a combined force and choice. We have the option to change what we are now as long as we know how to control our choices. The better the choices we make the better our life may become.

There are somethings in our control and we choose them but there are some other things that we cannot control and external factors force our choices in those matters.

Whatever our perceptions and definitions are with regards to the issue, we are all responsible for our actions whether it be good or bad and we alone are to take the blame or the consequences.. It is neither the force that controls us or any other factors. Certainly, there are forces that affects our choices, like our mental make ups, upbringings, environment etc. but at the end of the day, we take all the responsibilities. A person who chose to commit a crime rather than do whatever is right and lawful, will have to face the consequences of his actions and the forces and circumstances that influenced his actions can not be held accountable or take the blame.

Life is a very mystical affair. The interplay of
choices and forces is something that has remained
mysterious thru and thru. There are phases in
life when choice and forces almost disappear in
to each other and turns up as function !!
This insight into function is pherhaps you are missing
dear !!

People do have egos, but the choices we make in life are ones of change, and all people have to change. To say that people make their own choices is egotistical I think is perhaps a flawed philosophy, and it is not an ego in me that refuses to believe that I don't have control over my own life, it's proof, and pure belief in the fact that I can choose to do what I want with what little time I have in this life.

yes your right ...its not right to say we are not responsible for our actions...life is nothing but making choices... and some of them are tough ones...one needs real will power and guts to make those choices...i mean to say that if you are mentally strong enough you wouldnt let the choices choose you

I think that
Our fate is the choices that we choose
So it may be as a force

What I believe is a little bit of both.
There are forces pulling us in one direction.. and I like to believe that this direction is the one that is the best for us. Yet along the way we are allowed to make choices that will change the direction that we are going in. Sometimes we make mistakes in making those choices, but if we are wise, the mistakes are few.

We are solely responsible for our acts.Yes there is a power above all of us but it does not take any control while we are living. We are free to choose our choices, that is why we have been given the sixth sense and the power to think.
In todays world we can make our decisions as we like and there will be no one to ask us unless our decisions attract others..

Human life is very tough to live as he/she has to perform many a things in life which he/she doesn't want to do. choices are made when we have options . Imagine if uyou don't have a single option and a single choice to make then it would be choice by force . It's like going to Bmbay from Ara by road there is a single choice for you that is Agra Bombay road . Instead if you want to go Pune from Bombay ,you have many choices . 3 national highways are there . This was a simple example I gave you about forces and choices.
