What and how would be the best way to help poor children?

I have always wanted to help poor children but have not been able to decide what would be the best way to do so. Educating them in such a way that they can earn well would be the ideal way, as far as i think. But then it would be such a high cost affair that i guess i will never be able to do it. Giving clothes and food, in my view, is help but its not helping in real sense. I know that even if i start with one child, probably many others would come to join me but i don't know where to start from? Any Suggestions?
