INTRANET
Intranets are similar to the internet except that only selected individuals are allowed to access an intranet. Intranet is based on the client/server model. Intranets are extremely popular and low cost way to distribute corporate information. An intranet uses internet based protocols including TCP/IP, FTP, Telnet, HTML, HTTP and web browsers. Because corporate intranets are compatible with internet, selected information can be readily shared with external users. One benefit of using intranet is that different departments of a company having different computer hardware can interact with one another on an intranet.
An intranet locates the requested information from internal databases, including inventory and work-in process information, formats the information and passes it from the intranet to the internet and on to the customer. The intranet infrastructure includes a TCP/IP network, web authoring software, web browser hardware and software, web clients, and a firewall server.
Intranet can save both time and money. In large and small organizations intranets are always the best way to distribute a wide variety of internal corporate information.
Advantages of Intranet
1. Increased ,less expensive ,environmental friendly internal communication
2. Increased information accessibility.
3. Low acquisition and deployment costs.
4. Low maintenance cost.
5. Increased information accessibility
6. Timely, current information availability
7. Easy information publication, distribution and training.
8. Able to run across all platforms and handle all clients.
Disadvantages
1. Intranets are not free. A company must weigh the benefits against cost.
2. We may need to upgrade computers by new software, run new cabling and train people to use
software.
3. People in an organization may waste time by watching sports results and checking the stock options,
if intranet is connected to the internet.
4. Some tools are immature and not ready for wide scale deployment.
