Why lie to the one you love?

My husband and I have friends that are married and it seems like they lie to eachother constantly and are always "testing" them. Now they aren't huge lies, but lies nonetheless. Like for St. Patrick's Day, my husband was going to go out drinking with the husband. I happened to mention something to the wife and she said he hadn't mentioned it. So instead of asking him, she makes up a lie about a group of people going out that day and can she go? So of course he says she can go, and then she said, but don't you have plans? And instead of telling her that he was going to go out, but he would cancel, he denied having plans. I just don't get it. Wouldn't it be easier to just ask outright about something instead of playing these head games?
