In Serial ATA data are transfered in serial manner one by one
by means of serial interface cable between the hard disk and
cpu by a IDE controller but in case of parallel ATA data is transfered by a parallel cable parallely with the help of parallel cable.

Parallel ATA are the older IDE interface hardisk. they use the ide ribbon cables. the same cables as uded in connecting CD-ROM/DVD-ROMs etc. while sata or serial ata are new hardisk types and use different type of connector.
SATA hardisks are faster than PATA hardisk.
sata also comes in two varities sata 1 and sata 2 both differing in speeds. these days motherboards support both type of hardisks.
