ATM stands for automatic teller machine. It means that it is taking the place of the human teller that you usually find inside the bank. It is just a shortening of the name and now almost everyone recognizes what you are talking about when you use the initials.

Why do we call a recreational vehicle an RV? Why do we call a television a TV? Why do I read the phrase "LOL" in nearly every discussion post instead of the words "laugh out loud". Abbreviations make our lives easier. In this fast paced world, abbreviations, especially for long and complicated names or phrases help us to communicate our ideas more quickly and effectively.
