I remember when I was in grade school, corporal punishment was allowed by the Principal and Vice Principal of the school. Usually they used a wooden paddle that the Principal kept in his office hanging on the wall and was signed by every student he'd paddled. Getting paddled by the Principal was thought to be a right of passage by some. To me the thought was just terrifying. Fortunately I never did anything bad enought to have it used on me. Corporal punishment to me is a double edged sword. One time I got called to the Principle's office and all I kept thinking was I was gonna get paddled but I couldn't remember doing anything wrong. I walked into his office shaking with fear. Turned out that all he wanted to do was ask me if I wanted to become a student crossing guard which was a great honor. Only the best and most responsible students in the school were chosen. I think back on it now and it makes me very angry that we had to go to school and be so fearful. However, now that corporal punishment in schools has been outlawed in the US there is a definite problem with discipline. Kids have no fear at all of being physically punished because they're taught from a young age that they can have their parents or anyone else thrown in jail for child abuse if they are hit in any way. Although I think true child abuse is horrible and unforgivable I sometimes wonder if there would be such a problem if the old paddles were brought back into use. Sometimes it's necessary for a child to learn that there are serious consequences for bad behavior.

My spouse, a teacher, use to complain of rude behaviour amoung studends. but it left teachers with no power to do anything. Any single pinch or pulling of shirt would be regard as corporal punishment and would land the teachers into trouble. that's nothing the teachers can do accept to shout at them and this too could be soon be treated as unacceptable behaviour .

I say, bring back discipline both in the home and in the school. Kids are running riot these days. No one is keeping them in check. We had discipline in schools when I went. We knew right from wrong. If you messed up, there was a price to pay. It kept you in line. You respected the higher authority. You thought twice before doing something if you knew there was going to be a dire consquence for your deeds. We are letting government take over and tell us what to do with our kids. We need to take a stand and take back discipline. It is sadly lacking in todays society.
