There is no setup.exe for the Windows XP disk. I suggest that you back up all important data such as excel files and pictures, then do a clean install of Windows XP. Make sure that the computer will boot from the CD drive, to do this you will need to look at the BIOS settings. While the computer is starting press either Del or Esc (the computer should tell you which) and you will go into the BIOS. Move the arrow keys to change the pages and look for the Boot rotation, this will show which drive is used to boot from first. You can change the rotation so that the computer will boot from the CD Rom drive before the Hard Drive. Now place the CD into the drive and restart the computer, this will automatically start the transfer of temporary files to your hard drive. When asked if you wish to install Windows XP select that option, and I would suggest selecting C drive then selecting Delete partition. This will let you recreate the primary partition and reformat the drive before installing the operating system. Now just follow the prompts and install the program.

I agree with you, taskr36, and you can download the file from the Microsoft website. The file will automatically format and create 6 boot floppy disks to do the same job that booting the CD would do. The point to be careful with is that there are 2 different files, 1 for Windows XP professional and 1 for Windows XP home, so the correct file must be used. Windows 2000 had the file on the CD itself and would run under DOS, so I never understood why Windows XP had to be different.

Hi: I am assuming that you have installed SP2. Even though this is installed you will need to go to Microsoft Update, and let them install the SP1 updates you need for SP2 to work. Then if your Cd-Rom is a reader writer,go into Properties for it under Recording tab, make sure," Enable CD recording on this drive " has a check mark beside it.Although it specifies recording, this also affects play back.Let us know.

it seems that the system is a bit old, first make sure that your computer can still read the discs, because it should have automatically started if you would insert it while running windows me.
