Remember when we get sick we are given hot chicken soup? Maybe because our parents then believed that the hot soup provides comfort and heals us when we are under the weather. Thus, the title "chicken soup" for the soul.

When one has a cold, folks would make a nice batch of chicken soup for them to feel better. In this case, this chicken soup is more to be read and feel better about so to speak.

Chicken Soup is known for its remedial qualities. Chicken soup is what you give a person when he/ she is down with a common cold, or a fever, or a cough or any other physical problem! I think apart from the actual effect of taking the soup, it also has a psychological relation to most people, since we all feel so good after taking that soup. It has a calming effect and is linked to hopefullness.
This is what they are trying to portray in the title - by calling it chicken soup for the soul, they imply that this book has qualities to help the soul feel better - meaning that this is the book to be reading whenever you feel low or depressed.
