My hubby was chatting to me about commic relief we noticed the noses and the pins when we were shopping inn Sainsburys today, I didn't realise that most( if not all) the celebrities were paid for the shows, Terry Wogan gets thousands of pounds and yet he is employed by the BBC who host the programme, They rave about some children giving up their pocket money and people sit in a bath of beans, some have all of their hair cut off too, Now please don't get me wrong ., I have joined in with this and I think it is great but surely the celebrities could donate their pay too, they could just be given out of pocket expenses, is this too much to ask of people who probably have more money than sense. What is your opinion? don't you think they are being hypocrite taking payment??xx

Its a bit like a telethon - the whole of the uk does loads of things to raise money to rid the world of poverty - and its a mixture of sadness at the situation people find themselves in and laughter as we try to raise money! you would never be left out honey!xx

I was under the illusion that the celebrities didn't get paid for these appearances and think it is a disgrace that they would even contemplate taking payment! I always try to do something but this year the kids at school outdid themselves it was a roaring success - at last count the school (primary) had raised over £500 and still had more to count - I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat watching them perform for the parents and NOTHING can take away from that!!!

I've watched part of Comic Relief yesterday. What I really want to know if the money that has been used to pay for the celebs came out of the charity fund or from a BBC budget for events like this. My guess is it's the latter one and that not only the celebs get paid from that budget but also the cameracrew and other staff. (Anyway I liked Dawn French with Sting. And Ricky Gervaise was always brilliant)

The BBC pay him but I still think he could donate it and keep only out of pocket expenses xx

i must admit that when I read all the stuff about Terry Wogan, i was a little disappointed but then I kind of thought to myself, well perhaps he donates money in other ways, Children in Need is basically him in a lot of respects, but it does sit a bit uncomfortably with me that celebs say one thing and do another. I still give to charity though, bits and pieces here and there, and usually a few chunky (for me) sums during the course of the year.

We always give to these sorts of charity or and buy one of their noveltys to also raise money. Just recently we had a readathon on the Mediumystics site, where people donated 5 pound for a reading for comic relief, we raised about $300 pound :). I wasnt aware that the celebreties get paid, if so thats shocking!!!!! I dont think thats how we do it here in Australia and if it was Id be pretty disgusted. We even have a McDonalds Big Mac Day and the celebrities actually serve the customers and they definatly dont get paid as they are helping charity as the proceeds are donated also. I think if thats the case over there id be getting a petition or something up or certainly boycotting those who are expecting to be paid for charity! Great discussion, thankyou for sharing.

Yes, they should give up their pay and contribute it's like taking the money from those that need it really. Our Scout troop is 'losing sleep for comic relief' starting tomorrow night until Sunday morning. 100 activities over 10 hours! All of the money they make is going to Comic Relief and they intend to have alot of fun :) Quite a few commented they didn't think it fair that stars were actually getting paid.

That's is one of the main reasons why I don't give a penny to Red Nose Day, it's the fact that I am NOT a hypocrite and I can't stand Terry Wogan, how dare he take a percentage, it's not right, why should people give over their hard earned cash to line his pockets. No I much rather give my money to local cat and dog homes and to charity shops in my area by way of clothes, dvds etc... All celebrities should do it for FREE it is so two faced. They can easily afford it and to me it's an utter and total disgrace, I even refuse to watch the show out of principle

Weemam I totally agree with you there it always seems to be the People that do not have a lot that give and the ones that are well off do not. They shouldn't be paid for that show, it should go towards the Charity But you know what they are like. The more they have the more they want, I mean they have a Life Style to keep I guess. But I agree with you there, it should go to the Charity

I believe that you are right with so many billionaires and millionaires why don't these people give to the red nose days, it would not break them and as well it would be tax deductible to for them, so I do not understand this at all. I have given to them myself but often wondered why with any charity causes why these other people with so much money cannot give more so that they would not need to do all of these kind of things, and yes I think that they are hyprocrites.

Over the years, more than 2 thousand celebrities have given their time and talent to Comic Relief, I dont think any of them are paid? http://www.comicrelief.com/all-about-us/ Sir Terry received £9,065 in 2005 for anchoring the 'Children in need' seven-hour extravaganza... Sir Terry, who is the only celebrity to receive a fee, has been paid since he began presenting the show in 1980.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6417329.stm

I think it's dreadful and that's the reason I don't give to any charities. Very little actually ends up going to where you think it is. When there is a collection for a specific charity, most people think that all the money donated is going to the charity. Huh! That's a laugh. Long ago I remember a well known singer complaining. She'd been asked to give her time to this charity and she was more than happy to do that. But they sent a limousine to collect her and bring her to a big hotel where she would stay till it was time for the concert then return to recuperate with dinner, drinks etc. She couldn't believe they would go to that expense when she was quite capable and willing to get herself to and from the venue.

I never knew that! I thought that the celebrities donated their time in aid of the charity. It kind of puts a whole new spin on it. I always donate in the form of red noses and events at the children's school. But it really would make me think twice about donating large sums. I think I would rather donate direct to the charities that benefit.
