Cross Stitching (How to backstitch)

If backstitching isn't on the pattern, how do you determine where and how to backstick?

I would take a look at the finished cross stitch and then use my judgement as to which things need further definition with backstitch.
You could try marking out the backstitching you think would look best onto the pattern? Perhaps make a copy of the pattern first, in case you screw up. :)
