I've heard this type of breed is very dangerous. However, my pet sitter had one and said it was gentle.
What, if any, has been your experience with this type of dog?

many people have heard bad things in the media about them and yes some have done bad things; however these dogs are a wonderful breed. IF TAKEN CARE OF PROPERLY. I have two and they are both female they are a delight to have. in fact if you look at my avatar you will see one of my pits doing her second favorite activity. sleeping. in the past these dogs have been bred to be fighters because they are very powerful however if you treat them with love and respect and do NOT chain them up and leave them they will grow up loving and caring. mine are very gentle and love people and love to meet new people. in fact in the agression testing that is done to test how agressive a dog is a pit came out with a 83.4% rating (as with any test the lower the number the lower the grade) out of 542 tested only 86 failed which means that 456 passed. there are several that are much lower than that. if you would like to read more. i wrote an article and the link follows.

I happen to own 3 American Pit Bull Terriers (pit bulls) & I absolutely LOVE them! They are much better with children than a lot of other dogs. They are no worse than any other breed. You should do your research on them & understand the breed before you get one, but that should be done with any breed. They don't need any special care that any other dog shouldn't have (training, socialization etc). What they do need a lot more of are responsible owners & defending from the public perception.

Agreed. Pit bulls don't deserve the reputation they have...it's the dogfighting morons who abuse the dogs to get them to fight for betting that ruin the name of the breed.
That said, be careful with any of the working breed dog with OTHER people's kids around your kid. We have found that our Aussie Shepherd and Rat Terrier dog are very protective of our son and will nip at and chase other kids if they feel our son is threatened...even when it's just play between kids.
The working group will attempt to protect the young so an eye needs to be kept on them and they need to be gentled toward other kids...and it's not just the Pit Bull breed.

they are very delightful dogs and gentle but can be trained to be guard dogs. Stupid people do that and now the poor dog has a bad name.

My friend's son has a female pit bull. She had gotten out and come to find out she got preagnet. She had 14 puppies. He had gotten rid of all of them but 4..(He kept them) I went over there when the puppies were about 10 weeks old.. I had taken my two chihuahuas over there. One was 6 yrs old and the other was 9 weeks old.. I was never so scared of them... After dinner I left.. I will never go over there again as long as those dogs are there...
I talked with my friend last night and one of the boy dog attacked his mother.. They now have him chained up in front of the house.. I just dont like them..

It sounds as though he's not a responsible pet owner. His dog wasn't spayed?? So he added to the pet overpopulation problem. And she got out? Again... does that sound responsible to you? One of them attacked the mother, and now it's CHAINED up in front of the house? Again... responsible? Do they even know what kind of dog impregnated her?
This is such a sad story, pit bull or not. This person doesn't need to have any dog, let alone pit bulls. When he "got rid of" the 10 puppies, he probably did it for free, and I seriously doubt that he checked into any of these people. Where do you think these dogs are going to end up? I REALLY hate to think about it. I work in Pit rescue and I SEE the horrors these animals suffer every single day at the hands of stupid people.
You may not like them, and that's fine... but I did my own research on the breed, and I don't own one. They are the most loving and forgiving dogs I've EVER come across. They get treated horribly by the thugs & criminals who TRAIN them to fight - they aren't born that way. They are set on fire, stabbed, spray painted on, baked in ovens, all because the media has created a fear frenzy.

Like pp said, pit bulls are only violent if treated badly or if bread badly. Many "pit bulls" are mixes, which tend to be less well behaved, I hear. We have an American Pit Bull Terrier, Sadie. We also have 3 cats and a 20-month-old child. Some people worried about Sadie with the baby, but it's been just fine! These dogs can be great pets.
