Are credit cards helpful, or just a way to get more debt?

Credit Cards is a very popular thing nowadays. Almost everyone has at least one and many people have dozens of credit cards. Credit Cards are supposively a convenience to purchase things without having to use money and when the bill comes you should pay it, right? They are suppose to help, but are they really helping or just causing more debt and economic problems for people? By the way what is the ideal number of credit cards you should have?

In my opinion credit cards are just way to get more debt. There are a lot of banks who give credit cards for free and even give you limit which you can spend. Here lies the problem. Many people take few credit cards with that kind of limit to spend and in a few months they are in huge debt.
Because of that I have only one credit card which I use only on vacation (don't want a lot of cash with me) or I use it to pay internet gambling (bet on soccer).
My advice to all is: if you rely need credit card, get just one!!! it is enough.

you are right goldmoney. most credit card holders have as much as ten or more. this gives them more access to credit. this can be disadvantageous if the holder does not keep track of the expenditures. when the charges pile up, there is no way that the monthly income can pay for the accumulated debt accounts.

Credit card companys make tons of money every month from those of us who don't know how to handle them. Otherwise they wouldn't be in business. The more in debt you are, the more business they offer you and try to be your "friend". I believe credit card companies promote more debt, that's their money making business.
# of credit cards you should have? 0
We still have two cards, but don't use them and just haven't canelled them yet. I need to get on that.

I hate credit cards... They give you more debt than cashing a bounce check actually...lol I have two cards and wish that I have never used them.. The APR is like 21% on one and 31% on the other.. You almost have to pay double your money when you send in payments because what you do send it never is enough to cover the charges they slap against you.. Personally I think Credit card companies are frauds cause it seems they can charge you anything they want and when you don't pay they take you to court and they almost get tripple your money.. I know this because a family member of mine it happened to her..

I have about seven credit cards, but I only use two and one of them only occasionally. I find it easier to use a credit card rather than carry cash with me. In I hate taking out cash, unless I plan to use it. Part of this comes from when I was growing up. My dad believed any money I made belonged to him, and there were those who I knew if they knew I had some money would volunteer me to pay for this and that (by the way, if you do not want your children to volunteer for anything, this is a perfect way to do it.) So I tried not to have any money on me, because I did not want to wind up not having to pay for something I really needed because someone else figured their needs were more important, etc.
I usually figure how much an item will cost then more, and then transfer the money to my credit card. This way, I avoid the insurance charges. If I have a big purchase, I transfer the money from my savings account to my checking and then to my credit card account. I have one of those dividend accounts. I believe about four should be the ideal number since some stores do not accept
Visa and Mastercard, and some stores have their own credit cards with ninety days to pay without interest, but that is if you do not have the amount to pay right away.

Why not get one of those magical things called a "DEBIT CARD'
They work the same way as the credit card...only...you don't have to transfer the money to pay what you spent on the credit card, it comes straight from your bank account. Transferring all that money seems like a complete waste of time when you could just use a debit card

Credit Cards can be very useful since one need not carry actual cash on oneself when going shopping and having to make payment. Including online shopping. Moreover, we can use the special priviledges that are given only to card holders. Like special promotions, discounts and also chalking up points and claiming some free gifts.
However, it is important that one has self control in using these cards. Otherwise, you could find yourself in heavy debt as the interest rates on credit cards are very high.
If one has good self control, it's ok to have many cards. The most important thing is ensuring that we don't spend beyond our means.

Debit cards allow you to not carry cash.
By earning those "points" and "discounts" through the credit card, you're having to spend more money, which is exactly what the credit card companies want. So you're not coming out on top in that situation.

Credit cards have their pro and con. Using their discount, rewards point are good strategy on money saving. However, we should always remind ourself to buy the necessary item.
People who got into debts are poor in self discipline. This should not belongs to the shortcoming of owning credit cards. Card holder should knows when to stop swapping. Plan wisely where their money goes.

I don't necessarily think that those in debt have poor self-discipline. Debt can come in many forms, not just in rampid credit card buying.
Debt comes in the form of buying a house, but in that type of debt, you are also gaining equity. People go into debt by taking out loans for school, but again, there is something to gain from that as well. A lot of people have a bit of debt from purchasing a car, but as long as you didn't purchase a brand new, very expensive car, I don't feel like you lack self-discipline.
Spending widly on credit cards is poor self-discipline.

Credit cards are boon if someone knows their limit and knows how to spend it wisely instead of indulging in compulsive shopping. If you pay the full amount for that particular month instead of part payment, you could be in some safe hands without landing in huge debts. But there is also another hitch with having credit card while shopping. That is if you are using credit card you will end up buying many things are not absolutely necessary for you on that day and if you had carried cash on that shopping day, you wouldn't have brought it through cash, this is a psychological truth. So, my verdict would be to have one or max two credit cards with you and use it only in emergencies and try to carry cash when going for shopping, and even if you have brought credit card for shopping try to pay by cash as parting cash will be harder than paying through credit card.

I think this is a pretty easy question to answer. Credit cards lead to debt.
Credit cards are no more convenient than a DEBIT card, where the money comes out of the account...money you already HAVE.
People are in so much debt because of credit cards, it's ridiculous!! And what's worse is that American Express and other companies have these "exclusive" credit cards for the elite, the rich and famous...like that all black American Express. It's supposed to be sooo cool to have one...but you know what?? If those people are so RICH, why do they need to pay with a credit card? Why can't that just whoop out some 100 dollar bills or the debit card that's linked to the bank account that has "All that money" in it?

credit cards can be helpful if we use it only when it is necessary. it can also be helpful if we use it within our spending capacity, taking our income and the amount that we can afford to spend each month. thus, we will never lag behind our payments. if we use it for wanton shopping, we will be neck deep in debt without knowing it. i have never taken a liking to the use of credit cards. most charge us annual fees and they charge us something like 3% monthly interest rate. i'd rather use cash. this way, i will never go beyond my affordability limits.

credit cards are helpful :D ...helpful in making my savings account have lesser and lesser money :P ..well i think it's very convenient to have credit cards because i'm someone who doesn't like to carry that much cash with me. but as long as you spend wisely and don't overspend and know your limits, it's ok. it doesn't mean if u have a credit card, u can splurge unnecessarily.

Credit card are never helpful..well to you anyways. THEY are helpful to the banks because by you using the credit card, you are paying the bank and making them rich.
America needs to learn to live within their means, and save for their stuff. You will be amazed at the stuff you don't buy when you have to pull out your cold hard cash. I hate letting go of my cash, and therefore spend less money.
More credit cards just means more money to more banks.
