I think it depends on the beliefs of the people and so on, it's very traditional to do it, and it has lived longer then the old conception of white dresses are for virgins only that now isn't used much anymore. I think it really depends on how much the girl wants it, as maybe to her it is a must and she would be disappointed not to have one. I for one want one, it doesn't have to be a real diamond and can be real simple it's more the symbol it represents to me then the cost of the ring itself. Being that it's given to the girl I think it's really up to what she thinks in the end, and sometimes what the parents think too.

I do think its important to have a ring so when you look at it you will be reminded of your love for each other. And it should be a diamond and not a different other stone I think it symbolizes your love too.
