making caramel sauce

I have heard about this for years but never tried it until a few days ago. I put a can of sweetened condensed milk [put in the whole can, unopend][I used the store brand], into a pot of water, covering the can. I heated it until the water began to boil, then I reduced the heat to a simmer, covered the pot and let it simmer for about six hours. I checked occassionaly to make sure there was still water over the can. I removed the can from the water, opened it and it was the best carmel sauce I have ever made. So easy, hope you all try it.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups water
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons water
DIRECTIONS
In a saucepan, combine 2 cups water, butter, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, and remove from heat.
In a small cup, mix together cornstarch and 3 tablespoons water. Stir mixture into sauce. Cook over medium heat and heat through for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Serve hot.

I meant to say earlier that I have a recipe somewhere for making my oun sweetened condensed milk using powdered milk. I plan on trying that in the next few days.

That sounds so yummy for ice cream.. I will have to try it...
