Superstitions. Black cats and such...

One evening I was leaving a store when a huge black cat ran in front of the exit. A group of people saw it too and I said half jokingly, "Oh no, I can't leave now that a huge black cat crossed my path." One lady said I could if I made a circle and put a cross in it. I wasn't clear on what she meant so she showed me. With her index finger she traced a circle on the glass door, then 'drew' a cross in it. She said it was ok for me to leave now. I thanked her and left.
Well I'd never heard of that before. Has anybody?
Any other superstitions you do 'just in case'? Sometimes I knock on wood but that's about it. lol!

No, I am not at all superstitious. Superstition is ludicrous. Does anyone really believe the number 13 is bad luck and the number 7 brings good luck? If this had an ounce of truth in it, many people would make fortunes or have great success in some way. Statistically it MUST be false.
The only superstition which has some slight truth to it is that walking under a ladder could bring bad luck. Well, IF someone is on the ladder painting, and IF he drops his paint and IF it lands on you, that could be called bad luck. When we consider the origin of this, it becomes ridiculous. The ladder forms a triangle. Walking under a ladder was considered to be breaking the Trinity. Impossible! The Trinity CANNOT be broken - and certainly not by walking under a ladder!
No thanks. Not for me. I deal in realities.

Many activities from our daily lives are rooted in superstition, like the clinking of glasses mentioned above.
For another example, in Rome a bridal veil was thought to hide her from evil spirits. Also, bridesmaids were supposed to be 'decoys'for the bride, misdirecting any evil spirits.
I find it interesting to look up the origins of superstitions, traditions, etc. I actually learn a little about the history and culture of different societies along the way. Always ready to learn something new. lol!
Thanks for answering. :)

superstitions are nothing but our fears in manifolds, or in disguise. what does a black cat can do that will affect our near future such that we had a bad omen -
the answer is very simple it creates a fear in our mind that we will have a bad day , and at the end of a good day also we feel we had a bad day.
even though we might had a bad day because of our own fault we criticize the poor cat. So according to me if you are confident about your life then no cat, no 13 can effect you .

A superstition does not necessarily have to do with fear. It is a belief not based on proof about a particular subject. A blindly accepted belief or notion. You can add irrational fear as an argument but it would fall under the category of a belief not based on proof (irrational) about a particular subject (fear of).
I don't really want to say because I don't want to hear people tell me what I need to do but I will say it anyway. God is the biggest superstition. I did not say god didn't exist folks so save it. Belief is the only proof of this particular subject which is god. It fits the definition of a superstition.

I can see the value in pausing and thinking before you act. I may have even drove home a little slower and more carefully, thus avoiding some kind of traffic accident.
Thanks for your insight.

Don't you think belief in superstition misleads you?
Unless counter varified with science one should not
belive in anything which troubles in your day today
life and work.
You can try out my suggestion this way.
For example take the black cat business as a sample case study.
you and other thre Start for some work simultaneously
when this cat crosses your path, and do not apply any superstition experiments; just check what happens you all four.
I am sure as per probablity theories two will will get a success in the work and two won't, I mean this can be the worst case if you execute this sample study for ten times.
The logic says all such events if studied show you a percentage of either results in a ratio as 45:55 if experimented for 10 to 20 times.
With this scientific approach you can come to a conclusion that nothing like bad or good luck exists but it just follows the toss-logic theory.
To make yourself confident in life you ought to go in a scientific ways only.
all the best.

You are right. You can use science to test the validity of certain superstitions.
One interesting statistic I read is that even though more people stay home on Friday the 13th, the rate of traffic accidents and hospital emergency room visits increases significantly compared to the average garden variety Friday. lol!

Thanks for the reply. Many of our traditions have origins in old superstitions. Like the clinking of the glass in a toast mentioned above. I looked it up and sure enough that tradition evolved from an old superstition.:)

You will not find this superstition anywhere... at least I don't think so. It is my own creation that I use to help others feel more confident & it seems to work if only the placebo effect.
A lot of people say they have bad luck with plants. I ask did you hope it would grow & they usually say yes.
I tell them you can't hope it will grow, you have to will it to grow. Picture it in your mind full of blooms & thriving. Do not give it the option to die with hope. It seems to work.
This form of psychology works in a lot of ways. Kind of like put a photo of the car you want on the your night stand so you see it every time you wake up.

I have never heard of the cross in the circle and I am not superstitious at ALL. I was born on August the 13th, and 13 is actually my lucky number! Also 31 (which is 13 backwards) is the day my hubby and I got married. We celebrate our wedding anniversary in 6 days (31st.) I have had MANY black cats cross my path, I have walked under MANY ladders, I broke 2 mirrors in a move once and I am fine. I am happily married with a beautiful 9 month old. For someone who should be "bad lucked for life" I think I'm doing pretty darn well.
